All About Depo Provera (It May Also Be a Solution to Endometriosis-Related Pain)

Friday July 20, 2007
The Depo Provera shot has been available to women for years. Yet, how many of you have heard about the newer version, the Depo-subQ Provera injection 104? There is not a lot of information about the Depo-subQ. In a nutshell, there are a few differences as far as the amount of hormone, and the way the shot is administered. After speaking with a representative from Pfizer (the manufacturer of both Depo injections), I was told that minus these differences, the two forms of the birth control shot:
  • Work the same way
  • Have the same non-contraceptive health benefits
  • Can cause the same side effects
Also, there is a black box safety warning associated with both versions of this birth control method.

What I found to be of even greater significance is that the Depo-subQ Provera 104 injection is the first new remedy in the last 15 years to be FDA approved for the treatment of endometriosis-related pain (I would like to add that the same benefit can also be derived from using the original Depo Provera shot). So, for all of you who suffer from endometriosis or know somebody who does, using Depo Provera may actually help reduce pain related symptoms as well as cause significant changes to the lining and tissue growth in the uterus. It may be something worthwhile to discuss with your health-care provider!

I too believe that taking the Depo shot helps with endo. I have been taking the Depo shot for 10 years straight. I have had 2 endo surgerys to laser the endo. I have had no period for the whole ten years which is great. Before taking the Depo shot I had bad cramps, could barley leave the bed, was curled up in bed, on pain med’s all the time. I think that the Depo shot is awesome with the systems of endo, it has helped me a great deal. I feel that if I was to ever go off of the shot I would be in such pain. My doctor has even said that by taking the Depo shot it helps with the endo pain and cramps. Thanks to whoever created this shot.

You had 2 surgeries while on the depo shot?
I hope you mean before the shot.

Because that doesn’t sound like a success story to me. I can take ibuprofen for the cramps.
What I’d like to avoid is the surgery.

I agree with Kris. I have been on Depo for the pass 11 years and I have had no period in that time. It has helped me live a normal life. I did not have that before I started Depo. The pain from endo was unbelievable. This is a great shot for anyone trying to control their pain from Endo.

I’ve been on depo provera constantly for the last two years and required to have surgical treatment for endometriosis July 2009. My organs were in such a terrible state with scarring and NEW endometriosis (and MUCH more!) so, I doubt this has been the effective treatment my consultant thought it would be. YET, he tells me to remain on this injection!
