Birth Control Options - Its What the US People Want...
Why Won't Congress Listen?

By , About.com GuideAugust 18, 2007

Follow me on:

Just off the press – a recent Zogby Interactive poll conducted a survey of 6,769 adults nationwide from July 10-12, 2007 regarding birth control issues. According to the results of this new poll:
  • 83% - the vast majority of American adults believe scientists should continue to research birth control

  • 74% - three in every four Americans who currently use birth control, said that they are satisfied with their current options

  • Although the poll revealed that older adults also strongly support additional birth control research, 87% of individuals ages 18 to 29 showed the most interested in the research of new birth control options

  • The poll also showed that people in all income groups showed a high degree of interest in birth control research
As far as insurance goes:
  • 61% of respondents said that their health insurance covers at least some of their contraception costs

  • 20% revealed that their contraception was fully covered

  • 24% - one in four – said that their health insurance did not cover any of their birth control costs. Of these 24% who received no coverage, more than twice as many were men (33%) as compared to women (15%)
Again, this is just more evidence to support that the American people are in favor of birth control information, options, and access to contraception. Can somebody please wake up the individuals in charge of running our country as perhaps they may have not heard the news? Last I was taught, aren’t the people we elect to public office supposed to be advocating for the wishes of those who they are supposed to be representing? I am pretty sure that our congress men and women are supposed to be standing up for what the American people want and not making decisions based on their own ideology and preferences. Isn’t that supposed to be one of the advantages of living in a democratic society?
