Jamie Lynn Spears...Pregnant
(Nobody is Invulnerable)

Wednesday December 19, 2007
Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old "Zoey 101" star and sister of Britney, reveals to OK! magazine that she's pregnant (The father? Her 19 year-old boyfriend, Casey Aldridge). Jamie Lynn revealed during the interview that the pregnancy came as a complete surprise. Given that the age demographic that watches her Nickelodeon show ranges from age 5 up until 19, this unexpected pregnancy is sure to have a wide-range of influence on her fans.

Parents should discuss this situation with their children and use it as a way to “check-in” to determine if their child has correct information about sex and the female body. Also, this is a perfect way to reinforce the notion that not teenagers, adults, or even celebrities are immune to the consequences of unprotected sexual intercourse. Although it is unclear as to which age group may be most affected by Jamie Lynn’s unplanned pregnancy, research from the American Psychological Association suggests that middle-school aged girls are the most likely to be impacted – especially if they suffer from a low self-esteem.

Jamie Lynn tells OK! magazine that she is intends to go forward with the pregnancy and will raise the baby in Louisiana. The bigger question - What message will this send to all the girls who look up to Jamie Lynn as a role model? When asked about what message she would like to send to other teens about premarital sex, Jaime Lynn responded, "I definitely don't think it's something you should do; it's better to wait," she says. "But I can't be judgmental because it's a position I put myself in."

The bottom line. Parents need to discuss sex and birth control with their children. As this example shows, nobody is invulnerable to the consequences that could happen if contraception is not used. Rich or poor. Famous or not – the chances of becoming pregnant and/or contracting a sexually transmitted infection are very real if people choose not to practice safe sex.

This wouldn’t have come as a “complete surprise” if someone had taken the time to explain the facts of life to this girl. And if her ignorance is propagated, you can bet her baby will be having her own “complete surprise” when she’s 16. Haven’t they heard of the Pill or abortion where she lives? Or are they too busy making babies?

she probably didn’t.

Do we know for sure this was unprotected sex? Has she said that? If it was a complete surprise, I’d assume it was a contraceptive failure or improper use. For almost every form of contraception, I know someone who has gotten pregnant using it, including vasectomy.

Children raising children…no, wait, someone else will have to raise her child. great. The one thing that should be a positive isn’t going to happen because she wont be able to take time for it.
And, hate to say it, but she isn’t very mature–not unexpected at age 16.

OH. here are more than one IRRESPONSIBLE persons,, Jamie, the 19 yr old, Jamies mom, the boys mom, Brittney, any others? Jamies mom & dad for Not being more strict and instructive, Brittney for not having been a better role model, the Boys parents, the “19″ yr old boy for having co-concented. How dare Nickelodeon if they think this is an ok thing, Id cancel Jamies contract right off . Nick is nearly as good a decent network as WALT DISNEY company. Shame on YOU Jamie for even desiring to allow yerself to go that far, Is she now on the road to becoming another Brittney??

You can’t tell me that in this day & age, any 16 year old, especially one who’s grown up too fast, doesn’t know about birth control. She obviously got pregnant for attention. She’s jealous of that sleazebag sister of hers for hogging all the publicity. Great reason to bring an innocent baby into the world. Not

(7) Julia says:

Even if she knew about birth control, then something went wrong. It goes to show that not only is it important to discuss birh control with teens but also the importance of knowing how to use it correctly. Plus, my kudos go out to Dawn for actually using this disaster as a “teachable” moment. People can say all they want about what Jamie Lynn’s inentions are – this is every gossip

(I hit enter by mistake). This is every gossip tabloid’s dream story. It is refreshing to see somebody take a more responsible angle and discuss the lessons to be learned here.

(9) teen counselor says:

Has anyone ever thought of talking to our teens about self-control, self-respect, and respecting the lives of men, women, and children? Yes, it is a problem in today’s society. We push our kids to become adults at too early of an age and then wonder why these things happen. Look at the clothing, music, and language out there.

(10) Evan says:

This can have a horrible impact on young girls! Unfortunatly, this will not teach the valuable lessons that teen pregnancy brings. Jamie Lynn has millions in the bank, can afford round-the-clock nannies, and will be back to work minutes after baby arrives. How many other young moms are in her situation? Probably not too many. She and baby will be on the cover of every mag and the attention will certainly be sending the wrong messages.

IVE GOT SEVEN WORDS ” SHEZ A WHORE JUST LIKE HER SISTER” (BRITTANY. BUT, BRITTANY DIDN’T GET PREGNANT AT THE AGE OF 16. BUT, IT DOESN’T CHANGE A THING, THEY BOTH ARE THE SAME!!!!!!!

(12) C@RLEIGH says:

SHE IZ GONNA BE JUUUUUUUSSSST LIKE HER SISTER, BUT MAYBE EVEN WORSE!!!! AND I GUESS SHE IZ THE TYPE THAT ACTUALLY LISTENS TO THEIR OLDER SISTER. TOO BAD HER SISTER HAS 2 BE BRITTANY THOUGH. IF I WERE RELATED 2 THEM ID BE ASHAMED AND DENY IT!

December 20, 2007 at 7:49 pm
(13) Vivi@n@ says:

SHEZ SUPPOSED 2 BE A KIDS ROLE MODEL! I MEAN HELLOOOOOOOOO IT MAKES ME SICK. SHES ON NICKELODEON 4 CRING OUT LOUD.!! A KIDS CHANNEL. THEY SHOULD CALL HER SHOW “ZOEY*THE WHORE*101.” I FEEL SORRY FOR HER CO STARS THEY SHOULD NOT HELP HER IN ANY WAY WITH HER BABY CUZ THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED. SHE SHOULDNT EVEN BE HAVING SEX AT THE AGE OF 16.!! THEY ARE GOING TO CANCEL THE SHOW “ZOEY 101″ BECAUSE THEY ARNET GOING TO BE SHOOTING HER BIG BELLY!! THEYD PROBABLY CANCEL IT FOR LIKE 2 YEARS OR SOMETHING. SHES GOING TO HAVE 2 TAKE CARE OF IT. HER AND CASEY ARE PROBABLY GOING 2 BREAK UP 2! THAT POOR CHILD WONT EVEN NO ITS OWN DADDY!!! THE BOY IS PROBABLY ONLY WITH HER FOR THE FAME AND MONEY. AND THATS NOT RIGHT AT ALL!

(14) Vickie says:

My daughter learned of this while listening to the radio. She ran to me yelling it right after hearing it. She was absolutely disgusted at it. She is 11 years old and thought of this girl as a role model. Not anymore! She refuses to watch the show and has considered boycotting the station all together! Parents need to preach to their children over and over the importance of abstaning from sex until marriage, not birth control, not just waiting until after high school. This country needs to get back to family values. This girl is noone to look up to, no matter how well she takes care of this baby of hers. On another note, isn’t this statutory rape????? This adult male should be prosecuted for this offense! Shame on both of them!!

December 21, 2007 at 1:51 am
(15) A Concerned Reader says:

Every single person is saying stuff about her, just because she’s pregnant. Do you know how many people in this country have already been pregnant by age 16? You people are talking all this about her cuz she’s a celebrity and her sister is britney spears. If you people want to spread the word about safe sex, then go ahead. This is the 21st century, anything goes now. People in middle school are having sex now.

(16) R.G. says:

Is there any idea that charges are going to be pressed against the boyfriend for statutory rape? The last I knew, a male of legal age having sex with an underage female was illegal.

(17) Beth says:

How can this pregnancy be any suprise to anyone? Nick programs show sexual relationships among young teens as if it is a normal, healthy, and expected thing. Our daughters watch these shows and think that what is displayed is normal. Of course the stars will end up thinking the same thing. I agree with the boycott suggestion. The trash on TV has gone too far and has gone on too long. If the networks won’t show programs that aline with real family values, quit watching. I grew up on Nick, but I won’t watch it anymore, nor allow my daughters to watch it. What they show is not what I want my girls to learn about being a young woman.

(18) Gavern says:

If your body wasn’t intended to give birth at that age then it wouldn’t. Hello? it’s called nature! Maybe if we took a deeper look at the entire picture we wouldn’t be so judgmental about it. Making the right choices about sex is always important. Helping our children learn to express the beauty of sex is even more important, but instead we shun them and try to protect them and instill fear about disease etc, creating discrimination against those who end up getting disease. If we instead talked to them from a young age about sex and not in a “medical, religious or educative way” it would help, if we expressed our desire for it in normal, natural ways, this would in turn prevent unwanted pregnancies, and abortion is certainly not the way, this should only be considered under certain special LIFE THREATENING circumstances. Sex becomes a problem because we hide it, just like drugs, however if we were primal and expresses it normally like the rest of nature we would have less problems. First of all, get ride of the fear based christian parasite in their minds and instill their own individual UNIVERSAL spirituality and you might just end up with a beautiful young woman who is actually able to enjoy sex and make love and the know the spiritual, affectionate & connective meaning. Oh and as for the “trash on the TV” don’t watch TV!!! you choose to watch, so don’t complain, I don’t watch TV anymore and I am SOOOO happy now, you can simply download your favorite shows and movies. Americans are controlled by their Tv’s and fear, you deserve better, allow yourself your own inner freedom. Good night & good luck and Merry UNIVERSEmass.

Another question parents can ask themselves is how did i put my children in a position to have ms spears as a so called “role model” in the first place. pregnant or not, what “role” is ms. spears modeling??

(20) mr r says:

Why can’t we send the message… ‘Just Wait’ Why does it have to be: Make sure you talk to your kids about protection and birth control!? People, especially teenagers, should not have sex until marriage. I myself saved myself and now I am happy married with the first woman I ever kissed, the same for herself… Its possible and not totally insane. Think about it, what comes out of teenage protected & unprotected premarital sex: problems, unwanted babies, burning genitals, emotional baggage, guilt, slutty reputation, & 3-5min of pleasure.

(21) LSA says:

In this situation, the questions that come to my mind:

- at this age did they really understand what could happen?
- how much did this person’s “role model” influence just by example have on this person’s choices.. not a question of right or wrong, just “choices” and “results”
- who will raise this child?
- can loving grandparents, family members really suffice for ‘mom’ and ‘dad’?
- does the young couple know how they want to raise the child?
- do they agree on how to raise the child?
- What does a 16 yr old think about or envision for her childs future? or her own future? What does that look like in her mind? again, no right or wrong, just choices and results.

(22) adoptee says:

16 & 19. Didn’t the parents see a problem with that? It’s not the three years, it’s the college student/high school student that I have a problem with.

By all means, carry out the pregnancy. That is one of the consequences of unprotected sex, but for the child’s sake – look into adoption.
