There is no disputing the notion that when it comes to condoms, there are a variety of condom types to choose from. Typically, when you are choosing a condom, it's important to think about what you are going to be using it for. By and large, latex condoms are the most popular, widely available and least expensive of all condoms, but these may not be the right choice for you. Why? Well, there could be many reasons, but one that may not be so obvious is whether you feel the need to purchase vegan condoms.
Many vegans are not comfortable with the fact that some condom manufacturing includes the use of casein. Though most people may never even realize that condoms wouldn't be vegan, it became known to me that many condom companies, in fact, process their latex condoms using casein - a milk protein. Given that vegans, on the whole, don't use milk products or by-products, non-vegan condoms could potentially be an issue. It is important to understand what it means when a manufacturer/retailer says that they sell vegan condoms because though there are efforts to create meaningful definitions and systems for vegan certification, there are no international or federal regulated standards or definitions of what makes a product vegan. That being said, it appears that there are at least three condom companies (Glyde, RFSU & Condomi) who have registered with vegan groups in a pledge to remain animal-friendly.
