Do you have multiple sex partners? Do you not always use condoms or female condoms when having sex? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, you may be more at risk for HIV infection.
Today is National HIV Testing Day -- The National Association of People with AIDS founded this day in 1995 and continues to be the lead for observing it. Did you know that 1 out of every 5 people have HIV and aren't even aware of it? Also, someone in the US is infected with HIV every 9.5 minutes. The first cases in the US (of what would later be known as AIDS) were first reported in June of 1981. Since then, 1.7 million people in the states are thought to have been infected with HIV... this includes over 619,000 individuals who have already died. The CDC estimates that more than one million people in the US are living with HIV - spanning the nation with HIV diagnoses having been reported in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
With statistics like this, National HIV Testing Day provides you with a reason to get involved, get tested and take control! Aids.gov provides you with how you can take advantage of this day... from learning about the things you can do to make an impact in your own family and your own community when it comes to HIV testing and awareness to identifying your nearest HIV testing center. Not only should you take control by getting tested, help spread the word and raise awareness about HIV.
