New Year's is the biggest night of the year for birth control accidents. Make sure you are prepared! But, just incase the fireworks from your New Year's Eve midnight kiss send you to a place where reason no longer exists, remember that emergency contraception is available to you. Plan B One-Step can now be purchased over-the-counter by people of any age. If taken within 72 hours after you welcomed in the new year, it can be extremely effective at preventing an unplanned pregnancy.

Ella emergency contraceptive is also available. This can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after birth control failure. Unlike Plan B One-Step, ella requires a prescription in order to obtain it. Other alternatives include: Next Choice, (2 tablet, generic form of the old Plan B) and Next Choice One Dose ( Plan B One-Step's generic equivalent). These are kept behind the pharmacy counter and are available without a prescription if you are 17 years old or older.

Happy New Year!
