The Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch is a prescription method of birth control. It is a weekly patch that releases a combination of ethinyl estradiol/norelgestromin (estrogen and progestin hormones) through the skin into the blood stream.

In November 2001, the FDA approved the birth control patch. Yet, the patch has faced some setbacks over the years. In November 2005, then in September 2006 and again in January 2008, the FDA called for updated labels for the Ortho Evra Patch warning users about the increased risk of "developing serious blood clots and exposure to about 60% more more total estrogen in their blood than if they were taking a birth control pill containing 35 mcg of estrogen. The FDA explains because the hormones are processed by the body differently than hormones from birth control pills, women using the patch will be exposed to a higher percentage of estrogen. Increased levels of estrogen may increase the chances of side effects, including venous thromboembolism. Since then, Ortho Evra has been named in over 2,000 lawsuits.

In light of this potential side effect of the patch as well as some of the public setbacks the birth control patch has been facing, I am wondering what YOU think!
