What Lead You to Consider IUD Use?
I’ve been married for 7 years & have 2 kids. Right now, we don’t want any more. But, I feel too young to do anything permanent. My friend told me about Mirena - it seems like a good option for me
Helpful Questions that You Asked your Doctor
The most important questions that I asked my doctor was how effective Mirena was (as I don’t want to get pregnant) and whether or not I was a candidate for it.
I also wanted to know if I could have the IUD removed at anytime as well as how much the insertion *REALLY* hurt.
How Did These Questions Help in Your IUD Decision?
The questions really helped in my decision-making as my doctor’s answered lead me to decide to go through with the insertion! He told me that Mirena was like 99.9% effective… one of the most effective methods around (just as effective as a vasectomy and more effective than a tubal!!).
It was also important to me to find out that I could have Mirena safely removed anytime within the 5 year span (just incase there is a sudden urge for baby-making). He also said that I was an ideal candidate because I was married and already have had children.
The doctor told me that the insertion may be a “bit” uncomfortable, but that he would provide me with an Rx for a pain reliever to take before hand if I wanted. This provided me with some assurance.
What I'd Do Differently
- The only thing that I would do differently would probably be pressing the doctor more about the insertion procedure. I have heard that it REALLY, REALLY hurts. Why would he offer me pain reliever to take if the insertion is ONLY a “bit uncomfortable”—hmmm?
- I wish that I would have be a bit more forceful demanding some more brutal honesty about the pain factor. He did say that the insertion is very quick, so I am hoping that if I am in pain, it will be over quickly as well.
- In any case, I have decided to go through with it (pain or slight pain) and am scheduled for the insertion on Jan. 5. Wish me luck!

Sounds like you asked some important questions to your doctor and received the information you needed to make your decision. As far as the insertion, I have heard everything from it being more painful than labor to it being no more annoying that a menstrual cramp... and everything in-between. I guess it is individual to each woman. Good Luck! For More Information About IUD Insertion: What To Expect During an IUD Insertion (ParaGard IUD or Mirena IUD)
