Help! I’m Bleeding and on Depo Provera: Is This Normal?

Sunday October 5, 2008

I recently received the following reader’s question:

“I jut got the Depo shot in late August during my period and then in the beginning of September, I started spotting and I’ve been spotting and lightly bleeding ever since - almost 4 weeks, Is this normal? Please help!” -- Stefanie

What Stefanie is experiencing is a completely normal side effect when a woman begins to use Depo Provera. In fact, many women stop using the Depo Provera shot during the first year of use due to irregular bleeding (spotting) and/or prolonged bleeding. This side effect is especially common during the first 3 months of use. Make sure to discuss with your doctor the potential for irregular or prolonged bleeding while using Depo Provera as research has indicated that women are more likely to continue with this method if they are counseled about the bleeding effects before they receive their first injection.

I had one Depo shot and have been bleeding for 11 months since. My Doctor says this is NORMAL with the shot. I advise never to receive this form of birth control

(3) Rebekka says:

I’ve been on Depo for 5 months. My doctor recommended it because I can’t take combination birth control pills. My first two Depo Provera injections were fine – no bleeding at all! About two weeks ago, I spotted (lightly) for like 3 days, then nothing. So far, I am happy. I heard that Depo Provera can make you gain weight – thankfully, I haven’t put on any extra pounds (I actually lost a few, but I don’t think the Depo had anything to do with that). I say, give it a try – glad I did!

(4) Belinda says:

I just had my third Depo Provera Shot about 3 weeks ago. I had a little bit of spotting (maybe like a week) after the first one. After my second injection, I spotted for 3 days, then nothing. Since then, I have had no issues and no period. For me, this has been awesome. I don’t have to remember taking pills every day and am totally protected against making babies. I completely recommend this method!

(6) Kathy says:

It’s nice to see they’ve made the drug less potent after countless of women’s lives have been destroyed from this poison. I got three injections. That was almost a year ago and my body is still not back to normal. I started my period two weeks ago and I’m still bleeding! MY PERIOD RUNS MY LIFE. These people should be sued.

(7) Annie says:

Depo is okay. I like that I don’t have to take pills everyday, but I have definately put on some weight. I also spotted for like the first two weeks, but that was it. I don’t like the weigh gain, so I am thinking about switching to something else.

(13) Kristen says:

I’m 16 and received my first Depo shot in February 09. At first it was great, after a few weeks I got an irregular period and after a few days of that, just began to spot/have brownish red discharge since then. I’m supposed to go in to my doctor within the next week or two to get my second shot but I don’t think I am. I want to switch to the pill or nothing at all, with this make it worse?

May 15, 2009 at 3:40 am
(14) Isabella says:

I am due for my next Depo Provera shot (#4) in a few weeks. For me, I had some irregular, light bleeding on and off for about a month after my first shot. No bleeding since then, except for my periods (which are lighter than before). I can’t use estrogen, so I decided to take Depo Provera over the mini-pill… so much easier! The only weird thing for me was that I got this lumpy spot where they gave me my second shot. It didn’t hurt – it just felt odd. It went away after a few days. I never got it again with any of my other Depo Shots.

(15) Steph says:

Im in the same exact situation.I wish I would’ve of never got the shot it has been the worse.I got my shot in Janaury after having my son in December.I thought this would be a good method of birth control because I would’nt have to worry about a pill everyday.I wanted to try a very dependable birth control because I was determined not to get pregnant any time soon so I thought this would be great.Well it was the complete opposite I bled the whole three months and guess what it is May 24,2009 and Im still bleeding. It has’nt been constant like it was in the beginning but it has been crazy.I was due back for my second shot on March 31.I stopped bleeding the second week in April and I assumed my nightmare was over and things where back to normal. My sex life was back with my boyfriend and I dont mean to get to detailed but I could finally get oral sex from my bf lol. Well guess what two weeks later I started bleeding again and that lasted a week and stopped.Well the first two weeks of this month I was spotting like old blood that had a brownish color that was annoying because atleast I could still have sex and just wear lightdays. Well guess what now just last Friday I started bleeding a bright red period flow. I assumed it was my period but Im not sure now because Im still bleeding bright red blood.I have been bleeding for 10 days non stop. I dont know if im having withdrawal bleeding from the depo or if this is my period. Im so frustrated and so is my boyfriend.I dont know what to do.My doctor prescribed me Aviane birth control pills and told me they should regulate my period and the bleeding should stop eventually but Im scared to make things worse. The pills have been sitting on my dresser for 3 weeks. Im totally confused and so tired of bleeding and buying pads and tampons.I need help any advice!!!

(16) Vanessa says:

I am thinking about starting Depo Provera. My aunt told me about another birth control shot that I’ve never heard of. It’s called Noristerat. Also, just to make one more comment, I have two close friends on Depo, and they love it (that’s why I am considering switching to it – am my friend swear it’s the best!)

(17) Amber says:

I am actually using the Depo-subQ Provera 104 injection. I have had endometriosis for years, so ever since the FDA approved it for the treatment of endometriosis pain, I was first in line at my doctors! Using Depo-subQ Provera has been the best thing that I ever did. Sure, I spotted for a few days at first, but it wasn’t bad and was over very fast. In the meantime, fats-forward 6 months, Depo hah helped reduce my pain better than anything else. I have virtually no more pelvic pain or pain with my period. I can actually have sex again because it doesn’t hurt and my pelvic-area is not tender or painful when touched anymore. Plus, my other meds gave me the sweats, so Depo has stopped that as well. Thank you for inventing this option. I love Depo Provera!

(18) Mary Gilkey says:

What a nightmare it has been for my teenage daughter one shot and her senior year in High school was destroyed 9 months she is still bleeding and of course her doctor does not think it is related to depo…someone please tell us that this nightmare indeed will be over. No prom, no friends in high school and now my once vibrant senior is sad, withdrawn and wants a hysterectomy…….sad so sad, just want my daughter back!

(20) K says:

I took my first depot shot back in April. I was fine for the first 2 weeks but as soon as I had sex my period came and I’ve been spotting since. What is really disturbing is that everytime I go to the gym my period comes down heavy and then back to spotting. Im going to my Dr this week, i will leave feedback from him

June 12, 2009 at 12:50 pm
(21) Shannon B. says:

I have only gotten the shot one time and i’m trying to be patient and let it get out of my system on it’s own, but it’s really getting to me. I feel like my period is running my life. Some days it will be verry light to the point where i’ll think it will finally stop. And other days it’s the brown/redish color but still not very heavy. I really just want it out of my system. If people get depo to have safe sex, what’s the point if you’re on your period all the time. No wonder it’s so effective. . . . It prevents you from even having sex.

June 17, 2009 at 3:49 am
(22) Sammy says:

JUST FOUND THIS ON A WEB SITE OF THEIRS;It is important to realize that once Depo Provera is injected, it cannot be neutralized or reversed should you experience side effects. Therefore, you may have to live with the side effects until the effect wears off. ISNT IT NICE THE WAY THEY PUT IT. ALSO;
If you are taking Depo Provera for birth control, can it affect the results of a pregnancy test?
If you have currently had your Depo Provera shot, the chances of you being pregnant are VERY slim. This form of birth control has an effectiveness rating of 99.7% . If you have stopped your shots, in an attempt to start a family, you may find that getting pregnant may be a bit more difficult for you due to the side effects of this form of birth control and the fact that it can take 6 months or longer for the shot to fully leave your system.

Like all drugs, Depo Provera has some side effects and also stays in the body long after its administration. A look at the side effects and the retention of the chemical in your body can help you understand how Depo Provera might affect pregnancy test results.

As mentioned above, Depo Provera inhibits the formation of a uterine lining and hence prevents regular menstruation. It has also been found that many women on Depo Provera gradually stop having any menstruation at all over the years. This can be a difficult situation if you are trying to get pregnant. Since a missed period is the first sign of pregnancy, women on Depo Provera can find it extremely difficult to pinpoint their ovulation and hence an ideal time to get pregnant. Since knowledge of ovulation date can be difficult to assess, these women may take a longer time trying for conception.

Before starting on Depo Provera, consult your doctor about it and find out if it is a right option for you. Especially, if you do want to plan a pregnancy after a few years of being on Depo Provera, you need to discuss this at length with your health care provider. Though it is safe as a contraceptive for most women, it can make getting pregnant a little bit difficult or prolonged
WHERE IN THERE DOES IT SAY YES I CAN MESS WITH THE TEST OR NO IT WOULDNT?

(23) shay says:

So i see why they say depo lasts for three months and u wont get pregnant…because the whole time you are bleeding and causes for no sex..no way to become preg!…

im 16 and got my first shot in the end of March and have been bleeding ever since. I am so sick of being on my period you have no idea. I wish I would have read the comments on this page before I got my shot. This shot is definately miss leading in saying that it usually stops periods, LIE. I dont know anyone on the shot that hasnt stopped bleeding.

(25) Robin says:

I have had no issues with bleeding or spotting on Depo Provera (I have been using it for almost a year). In fact, though my periods are not gone, they are very light and a day or two long. My issue is that nobody told me about how Depo Provera can make you feel – mentally. For the first month, I felt very nervousness-like (maybe jittery) and dizzy. My doctor said this is a less common side effect of Depo Provera. I waited it out and felt much better after my next shot. I plan to stop after my next injection, so I can prepare to get pregnant. Wish me luck!

(26) Savannah R. says:

I got the shot may 1st. been bleeding ever since and it’s july 11th. its sad because thats why i got the shot- my doc said it will stop with the shot.

well, sex is wierd with constant spotting, and i feel for you all that have serious heavy bleeding. i’m familiar with either the bright red blood or the dark brown/red smelly old blood during spotting.

Showers help, but of course that smell isn’t leaving if the blood is still coming.

DO NOT GET ON DEPO PROVERA.

i’d rather have my regular period back and take a pill everyday then deal with this gross mess. and i know my boyfriend would agree.

so take me and every other woman tricked into getting this stupid shot seriously and-

1) Do your research
2) Don’t believe anything you ‘learn’
3) DO NOT GET THE DEPO PROVERA SHOT.

i will be praying for us.

(27) Analeigh says:

I read all of your stories and feel so bad! For me, Depo Provera has been awesome. My only complaint is the pain of the actual injection! But, its worth it for the 3 months of worry-free birth control. Girls out there who have had good experiences, you need to share them, so people don’t think Depo Provera is as bad as all these stories sound!

July 14, 2009 at 10:24 pm
(28) Marion says:

Oh god I feel so sorry for you guys. Im 24 and have been on and off Depo since I was 19 havent had any problems till have shot 3 weeks ago and have just started to bleed. Annoying yes. For those people who think they could be pregnant depo is actually highly effective out of 100 women only 1 will get pregnant out of that lot. With the bleeding I think it must aggravate the uterine lining, i dont think the bleeding is actually from the egg being released. Drink soy milk it has oestrogen in it it may help counteract the progesterone and stop your bleeding good luck :)

I have been on the Depo Provera shot for over a year and want to switch to another method. I haven’t had any side effects – bleeding, weight gain, etc. I just don’t like getting shots! When I stated Depo Provera, there weren’t a lot of progestin-only options available. I do wish to continue with a hormonal method (these seem more reliable). Does anyone know what my other choices are? Thanks!

(31) NancieP says:

I had a depo shot prior to a minor surgery on April 30th. Had my procedure on May 12th. When my normal cycle was due on May 19th I got it…AND STILL HAVE IT!!!!! I went to the doc again last week and he prescribed 7 days of estrogen; but even the website says NOTHING counteracts the effect of the depo shot so I’m apprehensive about taking it. After reading some of these horrific comments I now feel even worse!!! Hope this stuff wears off soon!!! What a nightmare!!!

(32) So_Classy says:

I’ve been on depo off and on for 3 years. Having my son at the age of 15 i figured it was the best prevention method. The first two years i hardly ever had a period i was so happy!!! But after missing a shot and restarting i’ve been bleeding daily for 6 months now! It won’t stop. I’ve thrown away dozens of panties thinking it stopped and taking a trip to the bathroom wiping and seeing clumps of blood. so embarrassing i’m near tears. Even as a young girl, i’ve despised mentration. so here i am grown and on the verge of insanity. i’ve got a dr. app in a few days. I pray to God they can make it stop. PLEASE LORD MAKE IT STOP!!!!

(35) kimmy says:

I had the same problem. I started depo July 08. I started spotting late august 08. I had read that this was normal and would most likely stop after my second injection. Wrong!! 2 more injections later and no help. It is now almost August 09 and I am still spotting. I read that this can last up to 10months after the last shot. I would NEVER recommend this to others. Its like having a period for a year! Never again!!

I first got my Depo Shot on May 15, 2009. At first nothing seem to happened because my period was supposed to come on the 15th but it came on the 30th instead, bleeding for 2 1/2 months straight and now the bleeding continues and its driving me crazy. I have bloating, headaches, mood swing and hard cramping. I just wish the bleeding would stop because I’m tired of the kotex. Im not going back for the second shot.

(38) Heather says:

I have had 2 Depo Provera Injections – the first month was a bit rough as I never knew when the spotting would come. Ever since my second injection, I have had no bleeding (yay!). I am concerned though because my friend just told me something that Depo Provera can lower my bone mineral density? I am 19, so I am concerned. Is this true?

I first got on the depo shot back in feb 09. At first it was light spotting but after the 2nd shot in may I have been bleeding non stop. No lie everyday and when it would stop it would be just a few hours and I would have sex with my boyfriend and immediately the bleeding started again. I don’t know if I should get the 3rd shot or wait to see if i stop bleeding.

i began my Depro Vera shot April 16 09 started period May 4th 09 was regular only it lasted 3 days with spotting on 4th day. I began spotting on May 25 and that’s all it was spotting but i spotted till June 11th. That was my last period I had another shot on July 15th 09. It is now August 6th and still no period.

Depo Provera is going to be different for everyone there is no one body alike. Our chemical changes are unique and of there own, our life styles different…etc. I just wanted to record what i have experienced and i am not unhappy with the product.

(44) Candi says:

I was on Depo for 5 years, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. From the day of my first shot, till a month after my last one, I never had a period, had extremely light spotting for maybe 5 days out of the whole 5 years, and was confident I wouldn’t get pregnant. I have been off Depo for two years now, and I’m going back on it this week. Is there anyone out there who has gone back to depo after some time off it, and had different results? I’m a little scared that I won’t be so lucky this time…

(45) Tosha says:

I’ve been on the depo for about 8 months, I thought it would be a great birth control because of my horrible periods. I haven’t had a period since I got the depo, but I bleed during and after sex and it’s painful. What could be wrong? I also bleed just from getting wet or horny. I need info on what could be wrong. This is destroying my relationship because it so uncomfortable to have sex and my hubby thinks I screwing someone else because I turn down sex everytime because of my issues. Help me for crying out loud.

(46) Kahra says:

DEPO PROVERA IS HORRIBLE. I got my first shot at the end of April 2009 and I was scheduled for my 2nd at the end of July but never went because at the end of May I started bleeding. And i have been bleeding ever since! But it stopped about a week ago. At first, I spotted brownish blood for about the first month, and then after that it was like a period but lighter. And then at the beginning of August, it was like a regular period. And i was bleeding like a regular period ever since the beginning of september, which was a week ago and then it stopped but now its like only a tiny bit of brown spotting. I was told that This is completely normal. But I DONT recommend Depo-Provera to anyone!

September 11, 2009 at 10:57 am
(47) courtney says:

I have gotten the depo shot several times priar to currently and everytime it has made my blood flow abnormal. I recently got the shot at the end of May before going on a trip to California… well I had my period the entire time I was there but this time it seem to last much longer. Its now September and I still have my period. Its kinda like towards the end of a normal cycle when your blood turns a brownish color but only mines is non-stop!!! Along with occasional cramps and heavier days. This shot obviously doesn’t have all its kinks worked out and should have further testing to see what is causing this un-natural blood flow. I don’t recommend this to any women its not beneficial nor is it worth the hassal!! For those who want to try and stop the excessive flow, my doctor recommended me in taking a birth control pill as a counter-action to the shot.

(48) PrincessBooga18 says:

I started depo at the age of 19. I had no spotting, no period, it was great. Coming off wasn’t so great. Depo can take up to 18 months to clear out of your system. It is recommended that if you come off of depo, to get on a BCP to regulate your cycles, or you may bleed for prolonged periods of time.

I honestly have a hard time understanding why people are so upset? The side effects are clearly listed if you research depo. Also, I asked a million questions regarding BC to my doc before deciding on depo. Ultimately it is up to your body how it will react to any form of BC. So to get mad at the docs and manufacturers is a bit silly. Putting any hormone in your body is taking a risk. There are positive and negative outcomes. You need to take responsibility for your own body and be as educated as possible before decided on a BC. The ” I didn’t know” excuse is a poor one. I would never put anything into my body without knowing all that I could about it.

So, to those who are stopping depo cold turkey, I would suggest going back to the docs if you are having problems with bleeding so you can stop it.
I myself have just started back on depo. I was off for 18 months, got pregnant, and now I need a really effective form of BC.
So far I have had one normal period, and off and on spotting. My only other option for BC was Mirena, but I have heard too many pregnancy stories with that one to be confident, and it too has spotting issues.
I will take my shots and the occasional spotting that come with them.

Im just so relieved to find out im not alone in this nightmare. I got my first shot in June09 and started spot bleeding immediately. I asked my doctor if this was normal and she said YES of course and also mentioned that over time, the bleeding would stop. I just got my second shot a week ago, and im still in this mess! I will NOT be going in for my third shot. It has completely ruined my sex life and has taken over MY life. I would not recommend this to anyone.

September 14, 2009 at 9:21 pm
(51) Jenny Lynn says:

I began using the shot in May. Like most other women, I wanted to prevent pregnancy, and thought this option seemed best. The first two weeks were fine, but since then I haven’t stopped spotting. It’s now mid September, and I’m going crazy. Some days it’s light, and it seems like this on-going nightmare might end, but it just always seems to maintain the constant flow. I have a great boyfriend who understands, but I finally just broke down and cried after sex one night. I want to be able to be in the mood, to not have a to grab a towel everytime I want to be with him. My Dr. said that the irregular bleeding stops, but I’m not going to be going back for my 3rd shot. If you are thinking about this option of birth control, just run over the idea of a never-ending period. It happens.

Depo has been a blessing for me since I started in nov. 2008 after I had bled heavily for 3 months and nothing else worked. I was ready to have a hysterectomy but thanks to this shot I was given more time. Unfortunately, my once a year period has arrived ontime again! Please Lord, let this shot work cause I can not handle another 3 months of hell! Are any of you suffering from diabetes? Does your blood sugar level seem to be affected by this shot? My blood sugar level seems to be off the charts when I get this shot, but I dont know what options I have.

I started depo july 23rd, its sept 22nd and still I am spotting and have light bleeding – why provide something like this to females when you later on find out all the horrible side effects, I have had depression, and having never suffered it knew straight away that something was wrong, the bleeding just drives you nuts – even the spottig is enough, you have to be on your guard all the time!!!! I agree the reason you dont get pregnant is because its just way too gross to have sex!! It is ruining my sex live and relationship – what else can I try besides condoms, when I have varicous veins and can’t take the normal pill????????

Hi, I started the Depo shot in January of 09 and started bleeding almost immediately afterwards. The bleeding continued through July when I didn’t go in for my next shot. I bled for a month after my last shot was due and then the bleeding stopped completely. Haven’t even spotted since around the 1st of August. Now for the last 3 weeks since I had sex, I’ve had pregnancy symptoms. Very tired and sleeping a lot, smells have a very strong effect, changes in appetite, slight cramping. But 2 pregnancy tests came back negative! is something wrong with me or is this just the stupid depo shot ruining life some more? please help!

I’m 18 and on july 15th, I decided that I would take the depo provera shot so I could have safe, unprotected sex with my boyfriend. I have never regretted anything more in my life.

It was fine for the first three weeks, no bleeding just felt like normal. Then I started bleeding. It was SO heavy and it continued for TWO WEEKS.

It then stopped and then it returned two weeks later. I started bleeding this gross brown/black blood. I’ve had it for over two weeks now.. Sometimes it seems like it had stopped, so I would have sex with my boyfriend but afterward I would bleed this bright bright red blood. It hasn’t affected my mood or my appetite or anything like that, but the periods are horrible. I can’t afford to pay for all of the tampons and pads haha. It wears off on the 15th of october, I’ll definitely NEVER ever take this again.

JORDAN – I’ve had the exact same symtoms, but I’m not pregnant either, so I assume that this is a common thing.

This is my 3rd time getting on Depo within the past 10 years and this time i’m having a totally different experience. I’ve been spotting everyday for a month. It’s extremely annoying!! I’ve been reading comments about taking the pill to make it stop. I’m going to talk to my doctor about trying that out.

Try depo ONLY if you are willing to risk your happiness and well-being for the distant promise of no periods. It will definitely prevent pregnancy though–how am I supposed to feel great about sex when I am bleeding constantly. DO NOT use this evil substance.

After I got my first( and trust it’s my only) shot, I was bleeding for 2 weeks straight. I back to the doc and she gave me 14 premarin (hormone pill, not a bc) to take 2 at the same time every day for 7 days. Today is day 2 and no bleeding! My guy is in the navy so when he comes home it’s important that I’m not having to deal with this. It seems like with all the other stories, taking sone form of hormone while on depo to stop bleeding will work, so don’t just sit there and bleed go to the doc and ask for something to stop it bcuz trust there is something! Hope this helped u!

I can’t believe how many people have complained about the never-ending spotting. I started spotting and having a light to mild, inexplicable flow a week 1/2 ago, I got my 1st Depo shot about 2 months ago. That’s the reason I came to the net to see if anyone else ever mentioned this issue and to see what was being said about it. Heaven forbid this spotting continue much longer.
I will not get the second shot because I thought of it: what on earth do you do to get rid of an injected drug that’s meant to affect your body for long periods of time? You can stop taking a pill any time you want, you can’t uninject the Depo shot.

WHoever said it’s easier to be abstinent was right. Or use barrier methods. Just say no is easier than these nature/health altering drugs that we don’t know the true safety of.
