Help! I知 Bleeding and on Depo Provera: Is This Normal?

By October 5, 2008

Follow me on:

I recently received the following reader's question:

"I jut got the Depo shot in late August during my period and then in the beginning of September, I started spotting and I've been spotting and lightly bleeding ever since - almost 4 weeks, Is this normal? Please help!" -- Stefanie

What Stefanie is experiencing is a completely normal side effect when a woman begins to use Depo Provera. In fact, many women stop using the Depo Provera shot during the first year of use due to irregular bleeding (spotting) and/or prolonged bleeding. This side effect is especially common during the first 3 months of use. Make sure to discuss with your doctor the potential for irregular or prolonged bleeding while using Depo Provera as research has indicated that women are more likely to continue with this method if they are counseled about the bleeding effects before they receive their first injection.

I had one Depo shot and have been bleeding for 11 months since. My Doctor says this is NORMAL with the shot. I advise never to receive this form of birth control

    (3) Rebekka says:

I’ve been on Depo for 5 months. My doctor recommended it because I can稚 take combination birth control pills. My first two Depo Provera injections were fine no bleeding at all! About two weeks ago, I spotted (lightly) for like 3 days, then nothing. So far, I am happy. I heard that Depo Provera can make you gain weight thankfully, I haven稚 put on any extra pounds (I actually lost a few, but I don稚 think the Depo had anything to do with that). I say, give it a try glad I did!

I just had my third Depo Provera Shot about 3 weeks ago. I had a little bit of spotting (maybe like a week) after the first one. After my second injection, I spotted for 3 days, then nothing. Since then, I have had no issues and no period. For me, this has been awesome. I don’t have to remember taking pills every day and am totally protected against making babies. I completely recommend this method!

It’s nice to see they’ve made the drug less potent after countless of women’s lives have been destroyed from this poison. I got three injections. That was almost a year ago and my body is still not back to normal. I started my period two weeks ago and I’m still bleeding! MY PERIOD RUNS MY LIFE. These people should be sued.

    (7) Annie says:

Depo is okay. I like that I don’t have to take pills everyday, but I have definately put on some weight. I also spotted for like the first two weeks, but that was it. I don’t like the weigh gain, so I am thinking about switching to something else.

    (13) Kristen says:

I’m 16 and received my first Depo shot in February 09. At first it was great, after a few weeks I got an irregular period and after a few days of that, just began to spot/have brownish red discharge since then. I’m supposed to go in to my doctor within the next week or two to get my second shot but I don’t think I am. I want to switch to the pill or nothing at all, with this make it worse?

    (14) Isabella says:

I am due for my next Depo Provera shot (#4) in a few weeks. For me, I had some irregular, light bleeding on and off for about a month after my first shot. No bleeding since then, except for my periods (which are lighter than before). I can稚 use estrogen, so I decided to take Depo Provera over the mini-pill so much easier! The only weird thing for me was that I got this lumpy spot where they gave me my second shot. It didn稚 hurt it just felt odd. It went away after a few days. I never got it again with any of my other Depo Shots.

    (15) Steph says:

Im in the same exact situation.I wish I would’ve of never got the shot it has been the worse.I got my shot in Janaury after having my son in December.I thought this would be a good method of birth control because I would’nt have to worry about a pill everyday.I wanted to try a very dependable birth control because I was determined not to get pregnant any time soon so I thought this would be great.Well it was the complete opposite I bled the whole three months and guess what it is May 24,2009 and Im still bleeding. It has’nt been constant like it was in the beginning but it has been crazy.I was due back for my second shot on March 31.I stopped bleeding the second week in April and I assumed my nightmare was over and things where back to normal. My sex life was back with my boyfriend and I dont mean to get to detailed but I could finally get oral sex from my bf lol. Well guess what two weeks later I started bleeding again and that lasted a week and stopped.Well the first two weeks of this month I was spotting like old blood that had a brownish color that was annoying because atleast I could still have sex and just wear lightdays. Well guess what now just last Friday I started bleeding a bright red period flow. I assumed it was my period but Im not sure now because Im still bleeding bright red blood.I have been bleeding for 10 days non stop. I dont know if im having withdrawal bleeding from the depo or if this is my period. Im so frustrated and so is my boyfriend.I dont know what to do.My doctor prescribed me Aviane birth control pills and told me they should regulate my period and the bleeding should stop eventually but Im scared to make things worse. The pills have been sitting on my dresser for 3 weeks. Im totally confused and so tired of bleeding and buying pads and tampons.I need help any advice!!!

I am thinking about starting Depo Provera. My aunt told me about another birth control shot that I致e never heard of. It痴 called Noristerat. Also, just to make one more comment, I have two close friends on Depo, and they love it (that痴 why I am considering switching to it am my friend swear it痴 the best!)

    (17) Amber says:

I am actually using the Depo-subQ Provera 104 injection. I have had endometriosis for years, so ever since the FDA approved it for the treatment of endometriosis pain, I was first in line at my doctors! Using Depo-subQ Provera has been the best thing that I ever did. Sure, I spotted for a few days at first, but it wasn稚 bad and was over very fast. In the meantime, fats-forward 6 months, Depo hah helped reduce my pain better than anything else. I have virtually no more pelvic pain or pain with my period. I can actually have sex again because it doesn稚 hurt and my pelvic-area is not tender or painful when touched anymore. Plus, my other meds gave me the sweats, so Depo has stopped that as well. Thank you for inventing this option. I love Depo Provera!

What a nightmare it has been for my teenage daughter one shot and her senior year in High school was destroyed 9 months she is still bleeding and of course her doctor does not think it is related to depo…someone please tell us that this nightmare indeed will be over. No prom, no friends in high school and now my once vibrant senior is sad, withdrawn and wants a hysterectomy…….sad so sad, just want my daughter back!

    (20) K says:

I took my first depot shot back in April. I was fine for the first 2 weeks but as soon as I had sex my period came and I’ve been spotting since. What is really disturbing is that everytime I go to the gym my period comes down heavy and then back to spotting. Im going to my Dr this week, i will leave feedback from him

    (21) Shannon B. says:

I have only gotten the shot one time and i’m trying to be patient and let it get out of my system on it’s own, but it’s really getting to me. I feel like my period is running my life. Some days it will be verry light to the point where i’ll think it will finally stop. And other days it’s the brown/redish color but still not very heavy. I really just want it out of my system. If people get depo to have safe sex, what’s the point if you’re on your period all the time. No wonder it’s so effective. . . . It prevents you from even having sex.

    June 17, 2009 at 3:49 am
    (22) Sammy says:

    JUST FOUND THIS ON A WEB SITE OF THEIRS;It is important to realize that once Depo Provera is injected, it cannot be neutralized or reversed should you experience side effects. Therefore, you may have to live with the side effects until the effect wears off. ISNT IT NICE THE WAY THEY PUT IT. ALSO;
If you are taking Depo Provera for birth control, can it affect the results of a pregnancy test?
If you have currently had your Depo Provera shot, the chances of you being pregnant are VERY slim. This form of birth control has an effectiveness rating of 99.7% . If you have stopped your shots, in an attempt to start a family, you may find that getting pregnant may be a bit more difficult for you due to the side effects of this form of birth control and the fact that it can take 6 months or longer for the shot to fully leave your system.

Like all drugs, Depo Provera has some side effects and also stays in the body long after its administration. A look at the side effects and the retention of the chemical in your body can help you understand how Depo Provera might affect pregnancy test results.

As mentioned above, Depo Provera inhibits the formation of a uterine lining and hence prevents regular menstruation. It has also been found that many women on Depo Provera gradually stop having any menstruation at all over the years. This can be a difficult situation if you are trying to get pregnant. Since a missed period is the first sign of pregnancy, women on Depo Provera can find it extremely difficult to pinpoint their ovulation and hence an ideal time to get pregnant. Since knowledge of ovulation date can be difficult to assess, these women may take a longer time trying for conception.

Before starting on Depo Provera, consult your doctor about it and find out if it is a right option for you. Especially, if you do want to plan a pregnancy after a few years of being on Depo Provera, you need to discuss this at length with your health care provider. Though it is safe as a contraceptive for most women, it can make getting pregnant a little bit difficult or prolonged

    (23) shay says:

So i see why they say depo lasts for three months and u wont get pregnant…because the whole time you are bleeding and causes for no sex..no way to become preg!…

im 16 and got my first shot in the end of March and have been bleeding ever since. I am so sick of being on my period you have no idea. I wish I would have read the comments on this page before I got my shot. This shot is definately miss leading in saying that it usually stops periods, LIE. I dont know anyone on the shot that hasnt stopped bleeding.

    (25) Robin says:

I have had no issues with bleeding or spotting on Depo Provera (I have been using it for almost a year). In fact, though my periods are not gone, they are very light and a day or two long. My issue is that nobody told me about how Depo Provera can make you feel – mentally. For the first month, I felt very nervousness-like (maybe jittery) and dizzy. My doctor said this is a less common side effect of Depo Provera. I waited it out and felt much better after my next shot. I plan to stop after my next injection, so I can prepare to get pregnant. Wish me luck!

    (26) Savannah R. says:

I got the shot may 1st. been bleeding ever since and it’s july 11th. its sad because thats why i got the shot- my doc said it will stop with the shot.

well, sex is wierd with constant spotting, and i feel for you all that have serious heavy bleeding. i’m familiar with either the bright red blood or the dark brown/red smelly old blood during spotting.

Showers help, but of course that smell isn’t leaving if the blood is still coming.

i’d rather have my regular period back and take a pill everyday then deal with this gross mess. and i know my boyfriend would agree.

so take me and every other woman tricked into getting this stupid shot seriously and-

    1) Do your research
    2) Don’t believe anything you ‘learn’

i will be praying for us.

    (27) Analeigh says:

I read all of your stories and feel so bad! For me, Depo Provera has been awesome. My only complaint is the pain of the actual injection! But, its worth it for the 3 months of worry-free birth control. Girls out there who have had good experiences, you need to share them, so people don’t think Depo Provera is as bad as all these stories sound!

    (28) Marion says:

Oh god I feel so sorry for you guys. Im 24 and have been on and off Depo since I was 19 havent had any problems till have shot 3 weeks ago and have just started to bleed. Annoying yes. For those people who think they could be pregnant depo is actually highly effective out of 100 women only 1 will get pregnant out of that lot. With the bleeding I think it must aggravate the uterine lining, i dont think the bleeding is actually from the egg being released. Drink soy milk it has oestrogen in it it may help counteract the progesterone and stop your bleeding good luck :)

I have been on the Depo Provera shot for over a year and want to switch to another method. I haven稚 had any side effects bleeding, weight gain, etc. I just don稚 like getting shots! When I stated Depo Provera, there weren稚 a lot of progestin-only options available. I do wish to continue with a hormonal method (these seem more reliable). Does anyone know what my other choices are? Thanks!

    (31) NancieP says:

I had a depo shot prior to a minor surgery on April 30th. Had my procedure on May 12th. When my normal cycle was due on May 19th I got it…AND STILL HAVE IT!!!!! I went to the doc again last week and he prescribed 7 days of estrogen; but even the website says NOTHING counteracts the effect of the depo shot so I’m apprehensive about taking it. After reading some of these horrific comments I now feel even worse!!! Hope this stuff wears off soon!!! What a nightmare!!!

    (32) So_Classy says:

I’ve been on depo off and on for 3 years. Having my son at the age of 15 i figured it was the best prevention method. The first two years i hardly ever had a period i was so happy!!! But after missing a shot and restarting i’ve been bleeding daily for 6 months now! It won’t stop. I’ve thrown away dozens of panties thinking it stopped and taking a trip to the bathroom wiping and seeing clumps of blood. so embarrassing i’m near tears. Even as a young girl, i’ve despised mentration. so here i am grown and on the verge of insanity. i’ve got a dr. app in a few days. I pray to God they can make it stop. PLEASE LORD MAKE IT STOP!!!!

I had the same problem. I started depo July 08. I started spotting late august 08. I had read that this was normal and would most likely stop after my second injection. Wrong!! 2 more injections later and no help. It is now almost August 09 and I am still spotting. I read that this can last up to 10months after the last shot. I would NEVER recommend this to others. Its like having a period for a year! Never again!!

I have bloating, headaches, mood swing and hard cramping. I just wish the bleeding would stop because I’m tired of the kotex. Im not going back for the second shot.

I was on Depo for 5 years, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. From the day of my first shot, till a month after my last one, I never had a period, had extremely light spotting for maybe 5 days out of the whole 5 years, and was confident I wouldn’t get pregnant. I have been off Depo for two years now, and I’m going back on it this week. Is there anyone out there who has gone back to depo after some time off it, and had different results? I’m a little scared that I won’t be so lucky this time…

    (45) Tosha says:

I’ve been on the depo for about 8 months, I thought it would be a great birth control because of my horrible periods. I haven’t had a period since I got the depo, but I bleed during and after sex and it’s painful. What could be wrong? I also bleed just from getting wet or horny. I need info on what could be wrong. This is destroying my relationship because it so uncomfortable to have sex and my hubby thinks I screwing someone else because I turn down sex everytime because of my issues. Help me for crying out loud.

DEPO PROVERA IS HORRIBLE. I got my first shot at the end of April 2009 and I was scheduled for my 2nd at the end of July but never went because at the end of May I started bleeding. And i have been bleeding ever since! But it stopped about a week ago. At first, I spotted brownish blood for about the first month, and then after that it was like a period but lighter. And then at the beginning of August, it was like a regular period. And i was bleeding like a regular period ever since the beginning of september, which was a week ago and then it stopped but now its like only a tiny bit of brown spotting. I was told that This is completely normal. But I DONT recommend Depo-Provera to anyone!

    (47) courtney says:

I have gotten the depo shot several times priar to currently and everytime it has made my blood flow abnormal. I recently got the shot at the end of May before going on a trip to California… well I had my period the entire time I was there but this time it seem to last much longer. Its now September and I still have my period. Its kinda like towards the end of a normal cycle when your blood turns a brownish color but only mines is non-stop!!! Along with occasional cramps and heavier days. This shot obviously doesn’t have all its kinks worked out and should have further testing to see what is causing this un-natural blood flow. I don’t recommend this to any women its not beneficial nor is it worth the hassal!! For those who want to try and stop the excessive flow, my doctor recommended me in taking a birth control pill as a counter-action to the shot.

    (48) PrincessBooga18 says:

I started depo at the age of 19. I had no spotting, no period, it was great. Coming off wasn’t so great. Depo can take up to 18 months to clear out of your system. It is recommended that if you come off of depo, to get on a BCP to regulate your cycles, or you may bleed for prolonged periods of time.

I honestly have a hard time understanding why people are so upset? The side effects are clearly listed if you research depo. Also, I asked a million questions regarding BC to my doc before deciding on depo. Ultimately it is up to your body how it will react to any form of BC. So to get mad at the docs and manufacturers is a bit silly. Putting any hormone in your body is taking a risk. There are positive and negative outcomes. You need to take responsibility for your own body and be as educated as possible before decided on a BC. The ” I didn’t know” excuse is a poor one. I would never put anything into my body without knowing all that I could about it.

So, to those who are stopping depo cold turkey, I would suggest going back to the docs if you are having problems with bleeding so you can stop it.
I myself have just started back on depo. I was off for 18 months, got pregnant, and now I need a really effective form of BC.
So far I have had one normal period, and off and on spotting. My only other option for BC was Mirena, but I have heard too many pregnancy stories with that one to be confident, and it too has spotting issues.
I will take my shots and the occasional spotting that come with them.

Im just so relieved to find out im not alone in this nightmare. I got my first shot in June09 and started spot bleeding immediately. I asked my doctor if this was normal and she said YES of course and also mentioned that over time, the bleeding would stop. I just got my second shot a week ago, and im still in this mess! I will NOT be going in for my third shot. It has completely ruined my sex life and has taken over MY life. I would not recommend this to anyone.

    (51) Jenny Lynn says:

I began using the shot in May. Like most other women, I wanted to prevent pregnancy, and thought this option seemed best. The first two weeks were fine, but since then I haven’t stopped spotting. It’s now mid September, and I’m going crazy. Some days it’s light, and it seems like this on-going nightmare might end, but it just always seems to maintain the constant flow. I have a great boyfriend who understands, but I finally just broke down and cried after sex one night. I want to be able to be in the mood, to not have a to grab a towel everytime I want to be with him. My Dr. said that the irregular bleeding stops, but I’m not going to be going back for my 3rd shot. If you are thinking about this option of birth control, just run over the idea of a never-ending period. It happens.

Depo has been a blessing for me since I started in nov. 2008 after I had bled heavily for 3 months and nothing else worked. I was ready to have a hysterectomy but thanks to this shot I was given more time. Unfortunately, my once a year period has arrived ontime again! Please Lord, let this shot work cause I can not handle another 3 months of hell! Are any of you suffering from diabetes? Does your blood sugar level seem to be affected by this shot? My blood sugar level seems to be off the charts when I get this shot, but I dont know what options I have.

I started depo july 23rd, its sept 22nd and still I am spotting and have light bleeding – why provide something like this to females when you later on find out all the horrible side effects, I have had depression, and having never suffered it knew straight away that something was wrong, the bleeding just drives you nuts – even the spottig is enough, you have to be on your guard all the time!!!! I agree the reason you dont get pregnant is because its just way too gross to have sex!! It is ruining my sex live and relationship – what else can I try besides condoms, when I have varicous veins and can’t take the normal pill????????

    (54) Jordan says:

Hi, I started the Depo shot in January of 09 and started bleeding almost immediately afterwards. The bleeding continued through July when I didn’t go in for my next shot. I bled for a month after my last shot was due and then the bleeding stopped completely. Haven’t even spotted since around the 1st of August. Now for the last 3 weeks since I had sex, I’ve had pregnancy symptoms. Very tired and sleeping a lot, smells have a very strong effect, changes in appetite, slight cramping. But 2 pregnancy tests came back negative! is something wrong with me or is this just the stupid depo shot ruining life some more? please help!

    (55) Samantha says:

I’m 18 and on july 15th, I decided that I would take the depo provera shot so I could have safe, unprotected sex with my boyfriend. I have never regretted anything more in my life.

It was fine for the first three weeks, no bleeding just felt like normal. Then I started bleeding. It was SO heavy and it continued for TWO WEEKS.

It then stopped and then it returned two weeks later. I started bleeding this gross brown/black blood. I’ve had it for over two weeks now.. Sometimes it seems like it had stopped, so I would have sex with my boyfriend but afterward I would bleed this bright bright red blood. It hasn’t affected my mood or my appetite or anything like that, but the periods are horrible. I can’t afford to pay for all of the tampons and pads haha. It wears off on the 15th of october, I’ll definitely NEVER ever take this again.

JORDAN – I’ve had the exact same symtoms, but I’m not pregnant either, so I assume that this is a common thing.

This is my 3rd time getting on Depo within the past 10 years and this time i’m having a totally different experience. I’ve been spotting everyday for a month. It’s extremely annoying!! Try depo ONLY if you are willing to risk your happiness and well-being for the distant promise of no periods. It will definitely prevent pregnancy though–how am I supposed to feel great about sex when I am bleeding constantly. DO NOT use this evil substance.

After I got my first( and trust it’s my only) shot, I was bleeding for 2 weeks straight. I back to the doc and she gave me 14 premarin (hormone pill, not a bc) to take 2 at the same time every day for 7 days. Today is day 2 and no bleeding! My guy is in the navy so when he comes home it’s important that I’m not having to deal with this. It seems like with all the other stories, taking sone form of hormone while on depo to stop bleeding will work, so don’t just sit there and bleed go to the doc and ask for something to stop it bcuz trust there is something! Hope this helped u!

    (65) girleeegyrl says:

I can’t believe how many people have complained about the never-ending spotting. I started spotting and having a light to mild, inexplicable flow a week 1/2 ago, I got my 1st Depo shot about 2 months ago. That’s the reason I came to the net to see if anyone else ever mentioned this issue and to see what was being said about it. Heaven forbid this spotting continue much longer.
I will not get the second shot because I thought of it: what on earth do you do to get rid of an injected drug that’s meant to affect your body for long periods of time? You can stop taking a pill any time you want, you can’t uninject the Depo shot.

WHoever said it’s easier to be abstinent was right. Or use barrier methods. Just say no is easier than these nature/health altering drugs that we don’t know the true safety of.

    (66) RGonzalez says:

I got the Depo shot after my doctor recommended it for me. I was hospitalized with severe anemia that required a blood transfusion due to fibroid tumors in my uterus. This was October 13th. For the first few weeks, all was great. Then around Halloween, I started spotting and now for the past three weeks it has been constant heavy flow. I have been bleeding for a month. So this shot, meant to help me not bleed (or at least have lighter periods), has made me bleed like crazy. I can only imagine what it has done to my iron level. All I want to do is sleep and not leave my house. Forget about having sex. The bleeding and excruciating cramps will make sure you have zero sex life. My ex took depo for years and had the best experience with it, so I guess it just depends on the person.

During the year I was on depo I gained a total of thirteen-pounds and my hair thinned dramatically. Although I went without spotting or a period the whole duration I was recieving the shot, I continued to not recieve a period for one year later and was threatened with a series of life-threatening issues when it turns out it was just an uncommon side affect of the shot. It also tends to make cramps a bit more difficult and can cause depression.

My husband is upset about it too and it causes fights. I’ve been told my body will get used to it, but I know it wont. I was on it when I was 15 for a year and the same thing happened. Also my sex drive is gone, which could be due to the nasty bleeding.

    (88) vicki says:

Ok, I started the shot in Oct 09, had my 2nd in Jan ’10. These 6 months were great, spotted only when it was time for the next, and Advil usually took care of that. I did notice my hair changing and gained 8 lbs, though I was working out 4 days a week. Fast forward to today, I’m supposed to go back for my 3rd shot this week. I loved not having my period, but didnt love the 8 lb weight gain, so I’m not getting it.

Well, I’ve been spotting for a week straight!! I know the side effects of Depo. I’m surprised I got by this time with no period. I took it about 8 yrs ago, 1st shot-no period/2nd shot-bleed for 3 straight months. Anyways today is making it 8 days of straight spotting and crazy cramps, my normal periods only last around 5 days and I never bleed enough to fill a light pad all day. I want this to go away!! lol

So, my point is ,lol. I’m never taking this shot again. Sure some of you have had luck, and I can’t remember if you’re still on it. And if you’re not, what happened then? I thought I wouldn’t have a problem(this time around) since my periods went away. Since going off it, I dont see this spotting stopping any time soon. If it goes on another week, I’m going to my dr and see what she can give me to make it stop.

Got the depo shot after I had my son in May of 99. Kept my bleeding 6 months straight. Some days light then some days heavy like a regualr period. I was loosing so much blood it made me loose alot of weight. I was so pale. Dr prescribed me on some b/c but that did not help. I will never use this again and I don’t recommend this to any other women. It took me 6 months to finally stop bleeding. Dr’s did not believe it was because of the shot, but I knew it was.. So after hearing all these stories on here, I now know I was not alone.

My doctor placed me on the pill once and it stopped it for a while but it started right back up, my doctor wants me off of it and wants me to get the implant that goes under my arm but now I don’t have insurance and I don’t know what I’m going to do , depo has ruined my life my fiance thinks I’m making excuses for not wanting to sleep with him and now he feels like I don’t wanna be with him.. just don’t use this I don’t care if ur doc says it won’t happen to you it more then likely will, there is something wrong with this drug and they need to figure it out I went from never getting my period maybe once every six months but now I can’t get rid of it!

    (98) Rosie says:

    Hi Girls,
I got my first shot of Depo about a month and a half ago. Didn’t have any spotting for the first month, but like clockwork (as my periods usually are, 28 day cycle) when i was due I started spotting, the first 2 or 3 days were really light, almost not worth having. Then it got heavier, like a light period. I’m usually quite heavy and get bad cramps, so I didn’t think this was too bad. But it’s now the 9th day after I was due and started spotting/bleeding and the bleeding doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all! I’ve never used birth control before and wanted something that’d stop my periods so I took a gamble with Depo… just hoping I haven’t lost. I really wanted some advice from any girls who had a similar thing? There’s many saying their bleeding started straight away then carried on, but mine started when I was DUE and is continuing. Anyone else experienced this? Obviously I am hoping it’ll stop very soon and get less and less each month at least… is this realistic? Also does the pill work to make the periods normal length – I’ve now given up my dream or having no periods! Any advice would be so appreciated – I don’t know whether or not i’ll take the next jab, as even if my bleeding regulates, I feel like i’ve almost totally lost my previously high sex drive. I was fine for the first couple of weeks but now this bleeding has eliminated my sex life :(

    (99) Kim says:

I have been on and off depo for years (I would get off to get pregnate, and yes it took a year and a half to do it after I stopped taking it) Now at the age of 35 I started it again because at my age and I still smoke (yes I know all the lectures about that) I was told I should get the shot again instead of the pill. Because of my past experance no bleeding at all, I had no problem with that. Well, from day one I started bleeding and haven’t stopped. Along with it I am depressed and I have hotflashes. I have googled this problem and found out that most of these systems are from low estrageston levels because of the shot. And from what I have been reading I need to take the pill on top of my shot to up my levels to normal. Girls talk to your doctor and see what they say. There is testing for it also so get the test and maybe this will help. I will let you know if the pill stops my bleeding. (On an off note I have been bleeding for over a month now and It goes from one second heavy the next light but still bleeding. From brown and smells funky (the best I can explain) to bright red and “normal smell”. I to am sick of pads and tampons (in fact using tampons so long kinda scares me). I understand and feel your pain if I find out anything I will let you know.

my daughter has been on depro-provira for ten years.when she complained of her side effects the doctor told her she needed anti-depressants. he never told her of the side effects,as when her injection was given she did not see the leaflet enclosed as the person who administersd it threw the leaflet into the waste bin.she has suffered massive weight gain, loss of hair, and i mean loss. she has had terrible depression and has felt pain and exhaustion very badly. she cannot get out of bed without takink painkillers.the doctor did not listen to her when she was evidently suffering from all of these horrible side effects.she works full time and has been in tears often, not knowing what was happening to her. she finally found this web site, and would like to warn anyone who thinks of taking this injection to really understand the side effect over a long perion. she has been on it for 10 years and it has uined her personal life. the docter never told her these side effects were from this injection. if my e-mail is on this letter, i would like to hear from other people on this medication. zoe.

i tried depo for 6months many yrs ago. had constant heavy bleeding so they put me on the pill for a month to control the bleeding. then no period for almost 6 months. nice yes, but scary.
8 yrs later im trying it again. no real heavy bleeding but constant spotting. the more I work out, the more i bleed. if I take a few days off from working ou the spotting stops alltogether but promptly starts back up after I workout again. I dont understand why this happens when they say the effects are light and occassional spotting.

    (102) Lisa Hughey says:

I took my first shot sept of 1992 my second dec of 1992, I was suppose to get third march of 93 but I didnt make it to the health dept that day. Thank God! I bled for 30 days as my nurse told me I would. It seemed to be doing fine, until about april. I started to be very paronoid, I thought people were conspiring against me. I had fits of violent behavior, and started drinking everyday. The least little thing would set me off. One time I broke every glass and dish in my house. I was a c.n.a. and Ilost my job and my certification because the police came to my house so often. I lost all my friends and hadno where to live. This went on til about January of 95. One day it all went away and I was almost my self again. I moved to a different state and started over again. However, it left me with great depression sometimes, a bad memory and nervousness. I wouldnt put my worst enemy through what I went through. Dont get the shot!!!!!!!

Hello Ladies….first i want to thank you all for posting your stories….now i dont feel so alone in this hell im trapped in! i started my depo provera cycle in late march….like many of you initially i had no period! for the first month it was completely gone….however in may i began to spot lightly….as time has gone on its been everyday NON STOP! in may i was hospitalized for an anxiety attack and have been experiencing massive mood swings and depression for the last few months….i was beginning to think there was something really wrong with me but after reading these stories i am convinced this poison is whats been wreaking havoc on my body! Ive experienced fatigue, weakness, pain, severe nausea, headaches….its gotten to the point where ppl think im just making things up because no doctor has been able to find the cause of my ailments….i was even put on medication for acid reflux trying to solve the problems….but i am convinced now more than ever this is whats causing all of these problems….i am actually due for my next shot this week but i have decided after reading all the stories that i will NOT be continuing on with this form of birth control! does anyone know how long it takes for this stuff to get out of the system? this stuff should be outlawed!….once again thank you all for your insight and i hope things get better for us all!

Ladies, i feel bad for those of you that have had bad results. I have been on depo for over 2yrs. No weight gain. my hair is as thick as ever and NO bleeding. The only thing is when they switch me to sub-q (without telling me) i ending up have dents or dimples in my stomach where the shots were given. Since i figured out what was happening they have switched me back and i now get it in my hip, with no dents.

I’m going into my 2nd month of being on the Depo. I haven’t gain weight or had any other problems but the past 3 weeks I’ve had brown spotting off and on. somedays it’s there some days it’s not there.. I’ve read a few comments and some say that after the 2nd shot it may go away, so my next shot is due in Dec. so I’m going to see what happens. I’m sorry some of you have had horrible experiences but for me I haven’t had anything serious but the irregular light spotting. I didnt have a cycle my after my first shot. I’m overall happy with it.. like someone stated it isn’t for everyone and everyones body reacts differently..

    (110) DeAnna says:

I have been on Depo for 9 months now. My period stopped immediately after my first shot. I have had a little spotting here and there but nothing major. It beats the heavy heavy periods I had before. I can live with some spotting. I have had no other side effects at all and love not having to worry about taking the pills. I am not allowed estrogen because of high blood pressure, so this was a perfect choice for me.

thank you ladies for all of the honesty or all ur stories…im so glad im not alone in this.for a minute i thought i was an abnormal freek! im currently in the first month of my second round of depo..like most of us, the first month of the first round was ok,no periods! i noticed lite spotting the second month but i didnt think anything of it…i thought maybe it was just my body cleansing itself bcuz i had no period the previous month. my biggest regret is not doing my research on this shot..i left it up to my doctors expertise ( which was no help) she basically didnt warn me of the horrific side effects of this drug!! but in the end, i chose it because i have a very busy schedule and i can b forgetful.so i have been spotting/bleeding since mid october..this has been the worst experience of my life!! i have terrible mood swings to the point i have to apologize to ppl for things ive said or done my sex life is really non existant…ive had sex once in a month and that was on a spotting day. my bf is starting to get frustrated…im far past that tho. i have a call into my doc to see if there is anything i can get to stop the bleeding…im tired of being bloody mary!!!! getting severly depressed. i need help fast!

I have heard rumors about this shot putting someone into early menopausal states so be careful.

I would like to know if that may have been a miscarage or if there is something wrong with me should I get checked out by a obgyn? I am 26 and have been on the shot since I was 14 have two kids and have not had a period untill the end of the 3 month cycle for the depo why am I bleeding so bad and why the odor help me

    (118) Dianne says:

For those of you complaining about a few weeks or months of bleeding or spotting… I had *heavy* bleeding for 3 years straight without being on any birth control. At one point I had to go to the ER because I had fainted from losing so much blood. They gave me 7 pills to “stop the bleeding” and insisted it should only take 3. It never stopped. I finally got on depo because I had heard that it might stop your periods. I was just hoping for a lighter or normal period. After my first shot I stopped bleeding for 1 week and the rest of the 3 months I was changing my super-plus absorbancy tampons every hour. The 2nd shot lightened the bleeding but it was still every day. The first month of the 3rd shot I had light spotting and then it quit altogether. I’m getting ready to have my 5th shot in a few days with no further bleeding. I’m sure that my description of my first shots effects will scare some of you but you have to keep in mind that I already had a bleeding problem and yes depo provera is likely going to make you bleed more than you do for a while. I suffered through it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Depo Provera is literally a life saver. As far as continuing side effects go… I have a crazy appetite and want to eat constantly for the first week or 2 after I get a shot. I’m sure this is where most of the weight gain comes from that everyone cries about. I didn’t gain weight when I started getting the shots but I’m convinced that it has hindered my attempts at losing weight. It hasn’t affected my sex drive other than a few days after a new shot when I just don’t really feel like having sex. After a few days it’s right back up there to normal. I definately recommend the shot. You just have to stick with it.

Young but I want kids in about 3 or 4 years so I don’t want this to affect me I want on normal birth control but I don’t want to tell my mom that…

    (122) Annelise says:

I’ve been on the shot for a year and I’m disappointed with having heavy periods and discharge.

About a month prior to each injection I get cramps and spot bleed, or will have a period lasting 10+ days, until I get the next shot.

And I bled for 5 1/2 weeks between the second and third shot! I was told that was normal.

After an orgasm, I get really bad cramps and will spot bleed for about 4+ days.
Needless to say, this has put a huge damper on my sex life!

I should be getting another shot, but I’m opting out for something different.

    (125) Dave says:

My sister took one shot of Depo after her second baby was born. She confided in me that the shot made her hate men intensely. She couldn’t stand the idea that a man would even look at her. She wouldn’t let her husband even touch her. She started sleeping on the floor of the living room just to be away from him. It ruined their marriage.

I read that Indira Ghandi used to have the Indian military round up hundreds of men on the street and forcibly inject them with Depo. It had something to do with lowering the birth rate so they could keep getting foreign aid.

What more can you say about a drug named tongue-in-cheek to sound like the word “deprive” ???

I was on the depo shot for 2 years and it worked like a charm no bleeding at all. I was advised not to be on it for more than 2 years because it can cause bone density loss. It’s been 5 yrs and I just started taking it again, the first month was great now I’m in my second month and have been bleeding for a week each day heavier than the previous day. I’m hoping it stops otherwise I won’t be getting my second shot. It does work for some though I had 2 glorious years without a period maybe I’m just not as lucky this time around.

hello, i’m 27 yrs old i started taking depo when i was 20 then stopped when i was 21 and after a preggers scare i decided that going back on it might be the best idea.

when i was 20 i never had any problems, no major depression, weight gain, bleeding, nothing. i started depo again in april this year, for the first 3 months i haven’t had any problems but now i’ve been bleeding since august 4th…

23 days later i feel like i’m dying. i can barely get out of bed, i dont want to move, i look pale all the time, midol has become my best friend and i just cant stand it. i seriously feel like getting this shot was the worse mistake of my life.

i just found out that the side effects of this shot, the bleeding that is ruining my work life, my mood, my sex life, my body in general can last for a YEAR!

i cant go through this much longer. i no longer feel like a woman, more like a stuck pig that wont stop bleeding.

I went to the doctor and they said it was blood clots. Im never sick.,always have normal periods. So i know its from the shot and ever since then Ive had my period. so two weeks now! The shot had made me really dry… im not going in for my second shot!!! PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS! it’s not healthy for your body! and i was really scarred that this happened to me!

Hi, I just got on the shot today, and i’m 15, yeah I know alot of you may be thinknig what is wrong with me and all, but I think that ome people should try it to see how it works for them.
I was on Loestrin24 Fe for 5 months and that was my first time taking BC, it was a good pill but I swithed to Depo because I just wanted ot try something different and I liked thei dea of not having to remember to take a pill at the same time everyday.
My doctor warned me about all the side effects and all, icluding the bleeding.
When I asked her like (how muh weight i could gain, and the bleeding stuff) she said it just depends on YOU and YOUR body and how your body reacts to it.
I deided to try it and see how the first 3 months go, if they go good then I might get the second shot, but if not, i’ll just swith bak to BC pills.
I just think that if you wanna try it, then try it see how it works for YOU. Just beause some people bleed a lot during it and all, does not mean you will as well, everybody is different.

I got the Depo shot about a month ago, maybe 5 weeks and for almost the last three weeks I’ve been bleeding with no end in site. And now my boyfriend broke up with me so I’m not even having sex. Doc won’t put me on BC pills because of clotting/stroke side effects and my uterus is “too small” (seriously) for an IUD so tried Depo. Never. Again. I’m constantly uncomfortable. Feel like I have cramping all the time and am constantly bleeding. What a nightmare.

    (149) Christina says:

There are some subtle side effects that will really impact your life but you likely won’t attribute it to the shot because they’re so sneaky and you won’t realize it until you stop taking it. I caution everyone who decides to try depo to pay attention afterwards. I was on it for almost a year and a half a number of years ago and it wasn’t until I stopped taking it (when hubby and I decided to start trying for kids) that I discovered all the things that were “wrong with me” were due to that poison.

    - Sex drive disappeared.. as in completely GONE
    - Sex itself was uncomfortable and sometimes painful around the vaginal opening
    - Acne (that should have been a clue having never had issues w/it before)
    - Constantly felt irritated/frustrated
    - Low energy

All of the above symptoms slowly crept up over approximately 6 months and they were all gradual so I thought something else was wrong with me. When I stopped getting the shot, all of my symptoms disappeared within 3 months of when I would have been due for my next shot. It did, however, take 15 months from the first shot until I had a menstrual cycle again. Unlike a number of other ladies on here.. I did not have a period from the day I got the first shot and then still nothing for 15 months after I stopped.

If you want to try the shot, go for it.. some of my friends have had no problems at all. Just be cautious and pay attention to your body. If things just don’t seem right after awhile, stop taking it and see if it makes a difference.

    (151) deb says:

Seriously, why would people be taking this shot for over 2 years? There is so much written on the bone loss issue, just after 1 shot, after 2 years and 8 shots.. good luck…oseoporosis: broken bones, and decreased quality of life when you get older!
I had 1 shot, and have been bleeding heavy for 2 months after the effects of shot wore off. Since this is a progesterone shot, I would think the antidote would be estrogen to regulate the cycle and stop the bleeding. Next week I am seeing an OB GYN to STOP this bleeding (although I really don’t want another birth control, but have no choice), the bleeding would easily put anyone into an anemic state iron deficiency). I feel so crabby and emotional, I would NOT recommend this shot to anyone, the combination of future bone loss and all the horrible side effects (like depression, bleeding non stop)..it’s not worth it!

    (152) Christine says:

I just got my 3rd shot today.
It seems to me that I get a shot, then after a month of no bleeding, I bleed for two months until I get my next shot.
I’ve experienced simple spotting and discharge, but most recently it has been regular flows, except during nighttime.
If this 3 month cycle goes the same as the last two cycles, I’m considering to just go on the pill. My doctor said that I don’t need to deal with that, and she wouldn’t either. lol
I’m just glad that I won’t be bleeding for a while now… I feel emotional at times.

I see I’m not alone. When I first did the shot 16 yrs ago, it was Heaven. I had no cycle and no side affects. So, I get the shot in June 2011, start my cycle on July 13th and I have been bleeding ever since. It’s not a heavy regular cycle, but it’s annoying. Of course when my three months were up, I did not go back for another shot.

    (156) CeeCee in MD says:

I went to the doctor’s in July for my regular pap and mentioned that I had stopped taking Seasonique pills in January because the lack of sex in my life for the past three years and it was getting too expensive. Since I stopped, for the past 6 months I was having terrible periods, very heavy bleeding, clots, lasting 2 weeks and painful…mentally and physically. Anyways, after running tests, there was mention of “overgrowth” in my uterus. The doctor started me back on my Seasonique and my period stopped within two days. The same day she performed a biopsy. About 2 weeks later I can in for results and she said I had endometrial hyperplasia and a week later was told to stop taking my Seasonique and given the depo shot for the hormone treatment to reverse the overgrowth. This happened on Sept 26th and I had been bleeding ever since then, which the doctor said would stop after about 2 weeks. Since it did not, and this was becoming mentally draining and depressing, I decided to start taking my Seasonique pills again. Since the very first day, the bleeding stopped. I don’t know if this is dangerous but I will never go back to taking that shot again..EVER!!! After three months, (Dec 15th) I am scheduled to go back and get another follow-up biopsy. I already expressed to her that I will not be interested in the shot but should I mention to her that I started taking my Seasonique? She said if the test is normal I can go back to taking Seasonique so that is my plan. If I am going back, I don’t know if it’s valuable to mention that I had already started back on the pills and MID cycle…. I have a prescription for the years so once they are done, I will start a new pack and be back on it normally. ANY THOUGHTS? I just couldn’t deal with the bleeding any longer.

    (158) bo says:

In 2002, I got the Depo shot. I bled heavily, and I mean very heavy and did not die.. I never knew a women could bleed like that and not collapse after a prolonged flow.. Wow, I was really starting to worry. So, the nurse practitioner put me on birth control pills for 3 months, and it seemed to flip the switch back in my brain to get back to a normal monthly cycle. I stopped taking the birth control pills after 3 months per her suggestion. And it worked. But once in a while I have noticed my cycles come 4-5 days earlier, but close to a 28 day cycle. I will never put any chemicals like that in my body ever again. That was really scary. I was so tired of all that heavy bleeding non stop.

For those women who’s periods stop, or bleed, it’s not normal.. Leave that stuff alone!

    (159) Pinky says:

Anyone planning to take the depo shot should really reconsider. Noone told me the side effects before giving it to me. The first two injections, I would bleed like crazy at random times and sometimes for weeks. Now I am on my third injection, I’m fat, constantly fatigued, and getting a disgusting discharge similar to hershey’s syrup. It is not worth risking your health over. I wish I would’ve been smart enough to do the research and not have screwed my body over. I’d rather go back to my intensely painful once a month periods than this ridiculousness. Use a condom, leave birth control alone.

From September 2006 til October 2010, I had my period none stop. I went to countless doctors before finally I had one say something was wrong. They tried giving me birth control pills but that didn’t work. So in October 2010, they decided to give me the Depo. That has seemed to work up until 2 weeks ago. Now I’m on my period again and it won’t stop. I’m also been extremely exhausted, extremely bloated to the point that my clothes aren’t fitting me right, and I put back on the 10 pounds that I had lost just a couple of months ago. I’m cramping really bad like before and I’m frustrated about what to do. I wanted to have them take my uterus out, because my mother had the same problem when I was her age, but they refuse, because I’m 25 and I’m too young, but the doctors don’t seem to understand, I’m tired of being on my period 24/7. I also don’t have a job right now, and it’s very hard for me to get things like pads and tampons. Should I continue to argue with the doctors about this? If someone could, can you email me at kaitlinballard86@yahoo.com

i have been on the shot for 12 months now and i have bled the ENTIRE time! ive come to the conclusion that “spotting” doesnt justify anything. My doctor said its normal the first few months n that it should stop. im due for my next shot in the next couple weeks but i refuse to get another injection. i used to NOT ever get my period n would only spot for about 4 days and that was nothing. roughly 4 days before i get the shot i stop bleeding completly & 4 days after i get the shot im back where i started. this is absolutly crazy and cannot believe that bleeding excessivly this long is ” normal” its so discouraging for me and my relationship n having my boyfriend dealing w. it as well. thankfully hes understanding n reasures me that its okay. i just hope when we do try and have kids that i dont have any complications and that is my biggest fear. im still young (20) but if the times right i would like the have kids by the time im 25. Glad i am not the only one that has this problem and its alot more commen in women then i thought!

I have been off and on this shot for years and never got spotting or bleeding until the last shot I got which was a week and 4 days ago. I was bleeding lightly right before the shot but my doctor had said once i get the shot the bleeding would stop. Now I got tons of pain in my abdomin area and I use tampons and it hurts to put them in. Of course I am very concerned and am seeing s doctor in a few days. This shot is crazy, if it dont give you one side effect it will give you another and your doctor will have no clue. I hope this is nothing serious! If it is the shot doing this I think this will be the last one. The pain gets bad and bleeding for over a week so far yuck! Doctors only tell you a few side effects so girls usually have to look up stuff on these websites its sad. when i first got this shot something weird happened. I was swollen in my abdomen and in pain. I had intercourse and some big bloody tissue mass came out. I called 911 because i thought either my vagina fell out of me or i miscarried. Can you believe the hospital had no idea what or why it happened. then they lost the mass i brang in and said i need to see a specialist. I went home and looked up everything on depo and found sites like this and found out i was not the only one who this has happened to. yet when i went to my doctor she had never heard of such a thing happening. Good luck girls on this rollercoaster birth control. we all better seriously just start using condems and quit messing with our poor bodies and minds. I hope this helps!

I was period free till the last two weeks prior to my next shot, but it wasn’t a normal period, it was more like light flow or even spotting on good days. My fourth shot however, it was fine, but the final two weeks were terrible, I had extremely heavy bleeding, and migranes with pelvic pains. I talked to my doctor about it, she said because of the migranes, they couldn’t switch me off the depo, so she told me to stick to it and call or come back if it persists. I had my last shot in jan… it’s feb 3rd, and I woke up with blood all over. . . should I be concerned???

5 years ago I had the Depo done but I had no problems at .. no bleeding no pains no nothing… it was gr8.

Last few months after being single for 4 years, I found the most amazing man. I felt things were going into the bedroom department and thought I better sort out some contraception. I went to the clinic and they said the Depo would be best for me….. 1 week after having the depo injected… I started to bleed……….I haven’t stop spotting since…….not nice, I am just so glad he is so understanding. I will wait for the 3 months and will go onto something else as this is not healthy for me nor for my private bedroom life.
If I knew this may of happened I would not of had it done.
But gr8 form of contraception for the young girls…. your too scared to have sex at all :) I am sure there is some gr8 stories out there, just sorry I couldn’t of been one of them.

I have now had two shots and i’m due my next one next month, but for the last two weeks i’v started bleeding, at first it was a browny colour then into my second week of bleeding it was bright red just like a normal periode pains and everything.. i don’t understand why i am bleeding when i shouldnt be, this is rediciolas!
Anyway being on this really made me feel worthless..
i thought i was generally going mad, NO SEX DRIVE, ABNORMALLY TIRED, NEVER WANT TO DO ANYTHING, MOOD SWINGS, VERY SNAPPY FOR NO REASON, AND I WOULD CRY FOR NO REASON, VERY EMOTIONAL WRECK.. i’m not going back for my 3rd shot as i want this poison to leave my body and feel back to my normal self, and to re build my relationship with my boyfriend, as he thinks alot of my actions are his fault. Personally i wouldn’t recomend this to anyone!
Please don’t do it as you might suffer like the rest of us..There is more bad written about this then Good so be careful on your choice..

i got on Depo Provera in January. The first month was good. No bleeding at all. Then i spotted not even for 24 hours. I thought this was implantation bleeding. But no. A week after spotting, i started spotting heavier, and have been spotting ever since. Its almost May. I told my doctor i wanted to switch to the pill, but she preferred not to because i could get pregnant more easy. She told me to take ibuprofen for two weeks straight to make the bleeding stop since ibuprofen is a blood thinner. Im STILL bleeding. And it got heavier. NOT WORTH IT.

I got my first depo shot when I was 16. I bled every single day for three months. My mom convinced me to get the shot again, saying it might stop if i just get one more shot. I bled for an entire year.. Every single day for a year. I became seriously anemic and sometimes almost passed out when I stood up. The depo shot gave me serious acne which I still have and I’m 19. I wasn’t able to have sex because I was on my period every single day. I guess it did prevent pregnancy but that’s only because I wasn’t having sex. :( Today I just saw a commercial for depo saying that if you have taken depo for more than a year it doubles your chance of getting breast cancer. I would never take that again and will never ever take birth control again because of it. The new doctor I have now says that the one thing that is most likely to dry up my acne is birth control. I might have to live with it forever :( .

I started bleeding irregularly with Cerazette so stopped taking it and started getting Depo injections. My first one was in spring 2011 and I am still on it. The reason I switched contraceptives was to stop the bleeding, but it is still occurring, although not as heavy as it has been previously. I was sent for an ultrasound scan to investigate why I bleed but everything was apparently normal. I am now waiting to see a ‘Special Interests’ doctor but am not holding out much hope! It seems like doctors/nurses don’t care about what is happening, I have been told to take Cerazette as well as being on Depo which is said to stop the bleeding, so I took one today and am going to see if it works. I don’t think it’s fair that I must have two forms of contraception just to stop the bleeding, especially when other women are period-free on one contraceptive. As well as causing irregular bleeding, Cerazette gave me awful mood swings so I am hoping these do not return. I think after the three months of my Depo are up I am going to come off that and Cerazette altogether and see if the bleeding occurs when I’m not using a pill or an injection. Although it’s horrible and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, I am grateful that other women know exactly where I’m coming from and share the same problem.

Got my first shot in December 2011 b/c I had been having a period for three months. I thought maybe I was pre-menopausal, but the doctor told me I was not and that depo was pretty good and would stop the bleeding. I took the shot and was in heaven. . . until mid January 2012 when I started spotting. Doctor convinced me to get a second shot, saying it would get better. That was in March 2012-been bleeding from light to heavy since then, and clotting heavily. Cannot take iron tablets as they give me severe headaches and make me depressed. I eat foods with a good amount of iron, but I am still being checked for anemia. My daughter is an adult, so I don’t want anymore children, but I also don’t want to say that I have been spotting/bleeding since Jan 2012. It’s friggin July 2012! I can’t get a hysterectomy b/c I cannot afford to take EIGHT WEEKS off of work, what are my options? This shot is the devil, and I scream it from the raftors to every woman I see! For some it may work, but for the majority, it is a nightmare that never ends.

I’ve known women to use the shot and have the expected results. I began the shot October 2011 and have had my period almost daily since mid December 2011. I’m horribly disappointed in Depo. My periods went from heavy for a few days a month to a daily painful messy experience. My doc said it should improve the longer I’m on it but I can’t take anymore ruined clothing and constant almost debilitating cramping. I didn’t take the scheduled shot for June 2012 and I can only hope this mess will exit my system quickly. Think long and hard before taking the chance on Depo. As I opened with, I knew several women that use it trouble free but sadly I didn’t fall in that category.

Ive experienced a 20kg weight gain sick of bleeding as not very nice for the sex life either so not an option i would use again once its worn off im going to opt for hysterectomy as want a quality of life without bleeding.

If anyone is thinking of getting it, don’t rely on these comments as no two people will have the same experience. I’ve been on it for 8 months now, I read horrible comments and some wonderful ones, I decided to get it anyways because I don’t like taking pills nor feel like doing that crap every day same time! Its easy and quick and gives you three months on bc. They tell you allllll the side affects and even re ask if you still are interested. They tell you the bleeding is irregular for some and most people. I’m glad I didn’t let the comments get to me and I went and got it because it really has been the best. Good luck if you decide to get it hopefully your experience can be similar to mine!

I had my daughter in January 2012 and I was bleeding for ages, then stopped for about three weeks, then started the mini pill which made me spot/bleed on and off for ages. Then I started Depo and I’m onto my 2nd injection and the spotting is still going. So I’m not sure if its related to my body getting back into it’s routine from having my daughter in January or it’s the depo. I’ve basically bled/spotted for about 6 months on and off. The best was when I was coming up to the next injection of depo and I had three weeks of no bleeding. I’m seriously considering going back to the pill because I’m absolutely sick of the spontaneous bleeding or spotting. And wearing a liner / pad constantly is driving me nuts. Plus I feel extremely lethargic constantly spotting / bleeding.

i had this exact issue….but its simple to fix ladies don’t give up hope! some girls just simply need the shot earlier than initially recommended due to apparently a strong uterus(i did not know this b4 talking to my doctor)…i went to my doctor and told him about my early bleeding problem (i was having my period for 3 to 4 weeks b4 my next due shot)…and he said i will have to come in 2 to 3 weeks earlier for my shot…he said eventually my period will fall into the original depo ‘time’ within the next 2 to 3 shots ANNNNNNND it worked!! so keep the faith and remember to consult your doctor before trusting anyone on the internet!

    (227) Katie says:

I received my first shot at my two week follow-up after a medical abortion. This first shot happend on June 25, 2012. I was bleeding for the two weeks prior to the follow-up and have bled every single day since. It is now September 26, 2012 – so that’s three months of continuous bleeding. For the most part it’s light and I maybe use one or two pads or tampons a day, but on occasion I’ll have a heavy flow with large clots. At first I thought this was a very bad reaction to the medical abortion, but now I see that so many people have this same issue that I’m starting to believe it’s the Depo. I received my 2nd shot on the 6th of this month and my doctor said it’s good I got it early because it should help slow down the bleeding. She told me to stick it out because by the end of 6 months the bleeding should be mostly gone. I’ve noticed it has been light the past week or so, but I have never gone a day without some bleeding since the first shot. The only side effects I’ve noticed are about 5-8 lb weight gain and I’m a bit more tired than usual. Even still, it is really draining physicially and emotionally to go for such an extended period of time bleeding and never knowing when it will stop. It’s especially hard for me because I’ve always had super regulated and short periods that I could almost schedule to the time of day that it would start and stop. So now I’m just lost and am going to hang in there in hopes that this will stop eventually. But I just wanted to give my story in case anyone else out there has had their Depo shot after a medical abortion and was worried that there was something wrong. I should note that I’ve been tested and all pregnancy hormones and tissue are out of my system, so this problem is definitely Depo related.

I got my first depo shot in Feburary of 2011. I bled all the way from February to this January (2012), almost a year! It was very frustrating, but I stayed steady and stayed on the shot. It is now October and I hadn’t bled, spotted etc. since January. Tonight I went to the bathroom and noticed that I was bleeding. That is why I found this web site cause I was just curious as to why I bled for 10 months, did not bleed for 10 months, then all of a sudden started bleeding. I am glad to know though that I am not the only one with this problem. I have also noticed that I am not as strong as I was before I was on the shot. Now I cannot lift things I used to be able to, and I get bruises easy and when someone hits me in a playful manner it hurts bad. I read that the depo affects your bone density. I was just wondering if anybody else had that same problem..?

    (236) Qiana says:

I guess it depends on the woman. A year and a half ago my OBGYN prescribed me Seasonique (a contraceptive pill where you get your cycle four times a year… I was having irregular cycles). Well the first four months I bled non stop, heavily. Then every time I got my period it lasted two weeks and was the worse pain ever. I decided to switch doctors after my OBGYN had no solutions and suggested I should keep taking the pills. Well come to find out, my new doctor says I wasn’t supposed to be taking that medication because I have migraines. A contraceptive that contains estrogen can give you a stroke if you get migraines with auras. She said I was lucky that I didn’t have one after being on it for a year and a half.

She gave me the Depo shot and I must say, fortunately I haven’t had any bad side effects. I get my third shot in a month, I’ve had slight spotting this week for the first time but other than that it’s been fine. The best thing for me is I don’t suffer from PMS anymore, which was something that debilitated me in the past. If anyone out there is bleeding after 4 months please stop taking the medication, whether it be the depo or any other pill. It either means the pill is too strong or too weak, either way there’s some type of complication. My main concern with the Depo was the weight gain so I did some research on how the medication causes it. It’s actually not the shot! The shot increases hunger which causes more eating, just watch what you eat and you should be okay.

To all the females who are having issues with their birth control, I know what you’re going through. If you feel something is off listen to your body because doctors don’t always have the right intentions (my doctor prescribed me something that could have killed me and knew about the condition).

I just hope when I stop taking the depo, it doesn’t interfere with me having children. I wish there was another way to regulate cycles besides birth control.

I started Depo August of this year, last shot was November. I haven’t had any kind of period since early September, now all of a sudden I haven’t stopped bleeding for two weeks. Sometimes it doesn’t even look like blood, it’s black and disgusting. Totally not what I wanted, I would have preferred the weight gain!

    (242) desiree says:

my depo shots are weird, one shot ill be completely blood free, then the next shot will make me spot everyday for the whole 3 months, sometimes i wont bleed until my body tells me its time for my next shot which is a good reminder, and the depo doesnt make you gain weight. it makes you increase your appetite. so if you dont have a healthy diet, and you eat more often..then you are gonna gain weight

I feel for all of you. I had been on the depo shot for a month with no problems. One day during sex I had bled ALOT and thought I had started my period. Its been almost 3 weeks now of constant bright red bleeding, much like a period. Its just getting to the point where its completely depressing, not even wanting to have sex with my boyfriend because of the bleeding. This has ruined our sex life and I canfeel a distance between us because of it. I feel like this shot is ruining my life!

i have gotten the deop shots for quite awhile when we moved to Germany (Army) my body i guess was not having it and i bled for a month straight well i got on tri nessa a pill and periods were regular i was not consistent with it so i just stopped. we went to the states for 6 months and i decided to give it a try once more so in August of 2012 i went and got it again i was suppose to go back in November of 2012 but didn’t, well i’m now off of it and I’ve been bleeding EVERYDAY since!
its really annoying and i really hate having to go to the store to buy pads and tampons! i would NEVER recommend someone to get on this! it takes forever to get out of your system and it ruins your sex life!

Birth control was recommended to me for weight gain but the pill and the patch made me vomit for hours to days.
The depo was recommended to me by my brilliant doctor, I had heard these horror stories and specifically asked she told me it was rare. I had my first shot Aug 2012 and felt dizzy and emotionally distraught. I didn’t have my period for about 5 weeks and then had bleeding non stop.
I was encouraged to get another shot in Oct so my body would “get used to it” and it’s now Feb and I have been bleeding ever since. (7 months)
Not to mention my mood swings and depression.
WORST CHOICE EVER. I’m praying it will stop.

I received one shot of Depo in April 2012. I did not receive another one because I used to be extremely regular but with Depo, I was not as regular. I stopped taking Depo and my period did not return for at least six months. Ever since then it has lasted 2-3 weeks from light to heavy spotting each time. My periods are completely disgusting from black to red to brown. I am super fed up with the fact that my body is not back to normal. I can’t believe that the side effects of stopping the shot are not prominently told to the client. I will never recommend this product to any woman because of the side effects. It’s not worth the hassle. There has to be something better than this shot.

    Hi All,
I have been on the contraceptive injection for over a year n a half now, i had some issues to start off with would start bleeding when in stressful situations but now all cleared up and haven’t had a bleed for months. Totally recommend this contraceptive, since i have got a few of my friends on it and all have great recommendations for it too. Makes life so much easier, no remembering to take a pill everyday and no bleed breaks just 12 weeks of being covered then go back to your doctor or clinic n start the 12 weeks again, couldnt be easier.
For the people who are thinking i dont like needles neither do i, you dont feel it at all. Maybe really skinny girls would but im a size 10 and dont feel a thing.
    Totally recommend it!!!! x

Then I received my second shot and round two weeks after I spotted twice then I started “spot” but really heavy. Now I have had my period for almost 2 months. I will definitely not be receiving my 3rd shot. I don’t think it’s work skin problems and 2 months of a period.

I started on depo in late august after I unexplainably lost my second child in the first trimester. I was advised to go onto depo until I was ready to try again and get some research done as-to my previous miscarriages. I’m about to go for my 9month shot here in june, and I’m still bleeding irregularly almost bi-weekly. Once a month I get a heavy bleeding that only lasts for 3-4 days, assuming this is my period.. Through out the rest I’ve been getting constant spotting, occasional heavy bleeding but no clotting like when I used to get my regular period. I have notified my Doctor’s office of this, the first time they advised me to take aspirin for a few weeks, the second time I phoned when I first started experiencing abdominal pains they said my doctor would call me back for an over the phone consult, That was nearly 4 months ago and I’m still waiting for his phone call. I’m still experiencing abdominal pains, bleeding and now daily nausia has added itself into the mix. I’m wondering if I should skip going to my doctors and go to the hospital for an ultra-sound..

For those girls who are experiencing bleeding after sex, get checked to see if you have inflamation of the cervix. I read somewhere that depo can cause this. I have to have day surgery to get this fixed.

I’m tired of bleeding, and now i know why you can’t get pregnant on this shot because you’re always bleeding, not that anyone would wanna have sex with someone who is bleeding like something crazy!! Hi! I originally took the with some speculation. My boyfriend highly discouraged it, but I was so concerned with not wanting become pregnant that I went ahead and did it, despite his disproval.

I took my first depo shot in December. After a week of the injection I started spotting, so heavy it is close to a period around the 2 or 3rd day of a menstruation cycle. My due date for the 2nd shot of birth control was April 25th. I did not go back for the second shot as I have decided I do not want to put any more hormones into my body.
I have been bleeding/heavy spotting for the last 8 months and I am the least exited about this and wonder some days if it will ever stop and I will return back to my normal cycle. When I ask for help- no one seems to have a direct answer.

I would sincerely discourage anyone from taking the depo shot. Do not mess around with it. It is a 50/50 chance that it will leave you miserable or it might work. However that’s still 50% that it will leave you with horrible side effects such as bleeding every day for the rest of your life.

I’m 22 and I’ve been on this for a year, with my next shot scheduled next week. No period, my ass. Everything is hunky-dory for the first couple weeks, and then I bleed constantly, aside from the 16 hours after I have sex. I have gained weight with this, too. Not sure how much (because when I started, I weighed 125 and was too poor to afford food, and then I was able to afford it again after I got the shot, thus gaining me 40 pounds at the most because I love pizza and I work a desk job), but I’m thinking of quitting the depo, because the only reasons I’m on it is because my boyfriend doesn’t want to wear a condom, and I couldn’t remember to take a pill every day if my life depended on it. But I really don’t like this bleeding thing, and have been anxiously awaiting menopause just so the bleeding will stop. I’ve got about 40 more years to go, give or take ten years.

I’ve been back on the shot since October 26,2013 -and that was two days after my period started and my period hasn’t stopped yet. The doctor is saying give it until January 2014, and it hasn’t stopped she will try a new method. I don’t know about that because normally after my last three babies I’ve always taken the depo until they suggest a break of the shot and I always end up pregnant after 18 months. This time there is no break unless I go celibate. Sounds good to me, but I live my fiance enough that I wouldn’t put him under the pressure of waiting on this stupid ordeal to correct itself. I just dont understand… I started the shot Nov 2012 and went atleast a year in half with maybe two spotting issues. very light, hardly the size of a pea… and I dropped to 100 lbs on depo. Now that Ive GAINED 30 lbs on the shot over a period of 7 months, Ive had spotting issues up to every other day. (Usually light, ) a couple times a month. The one bad bleeding was during Thanksgiving break and I went thru a reg. tampon once or twice an hour for 10 days. Im only 4 ft 10, is the weight fluctuations the culprit? =/ It seems like Im working backwards with symptoms instead of forward. I would have never guessed that after a year of being on Depo that I would suddenly have issues out of no where. Not sure what to do. Guess Ill ask my doctor on my next due date.
