September 26 will mark the third annual World Contraception Day – a worldwide campaign aiming to raise awareness of contraception, the need to reduce the high levels of unplanned pregnancy and to improve the level of education regarding reproductive and sexual health.
World Contraception Day attempts to deliver the message: “It’s Your Life.” The theme for 2009 is taking on a new focus - the motto - Your Life, Your Voice: Talk Contraception. The aim of the campaign is to encourage young people to talk about sex and contraception, so they have all the information they need to prevent an unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection.
This year’s’ campaign encourages teens: if you are thinking about having sex (but don’t know where to go for good information about contraception), talk to people you trust (like your parents or a healthcare professional) who will be able to give you advice. Don’t be afraid of talking to your boyfriend or girlfriend about birth control before having sex.
This year, in honor of World Contraception Day, a Youth Task Force blog has been created, bringing together a diverse group of creative, hip, and well-known people from around the world to bring you stories, advice, and words of wisdom about relationships and contraception. The Youth Task Force will be writing, musing, chatting, making videos and talking with teens about these topics. They’ll be gathering voices and encouraging more people to take part in the contraception conversation all over the world. Add your voice to the conversation — it's your life and it's your voice, so “Talk Contraception!”
Last year, Hollywood reality star Kelly Osbourne served as the global ambassador for World Contraception Day 2008, and actress Mischa Barton presented the launch of this first-ever international contraception awareness campaign in 2007.
