500,000 Reasons to Celebrate National Condom Week

By February 16, 2012

Follow me on:

Did you know that this is National Condom Week? Running from February 14 - February 21, National Condom Week originated in the 1970's at the University of California, Berkeley. The goal of this week is to help educate people about the risks that can come with unprotected sex. What it so cool about this campaign is that is stresses the importance of using humor as the way to educate others. I bet some of your most beloved condom slogans were devised during National Condom week over the years. How many of these have you heard?

  • "Don't be silly, protect your willy"
  • "It will be sweeter if you wrap your peter"
  • "When in doubt, shroud your spout"
  • "No glove, no love!"

In conjunction with National Condom Week, I have some great news to share with you all. Back in December, I introduced you to Sir Richard's Condom Company, home of the condom that gives back. Operating under the belief that the power of business can help bring health and pleasure to the global community, for every Sir Richard's Condom bought, one will be donated to a developing country. Well, Sir Richard's just announced that they plan to make their first donation this spring of 500,000 condoms to Haiti! The company chose Haiti because it has one of the highest adult HIV infection rates in the world.

These condoms will be available for free at Partners In Health clinics. On top of the goal of trying to bridge the need for condoms, Sir Richard's aspires to deliver a condom that is also culturally relevant to Haitians, hoping this will help promote usage. With the help of a Port-au-Prince native, the company created the condom brand KORE, which is a slang term that translates as "I have your back." The condom's package is also written in Haitian Creole and has easy to follow picture instructions.

Christopher Hamon, Haiti Procurement Coordinator for Partners In Health explains,

"Within the last year, Partners In Health has treated more than 6,300 HIV-positive patients in Haiti. Reinforcing the importance of condom use and ensuring that condoms are available and accessible is key in our battle against the spread of HIV/AIDS. PIH is deeply grateful for Sir Richard's partnership in this mission."

If YOU want to be part of Sir Richard's buy-one, give-one initiative, all you need to do is buy their condoms! If you just want to be part of this awesome initiative (without buying condoms), all you need to do is help celebrate National Condom Week by sharing your love for condoms ... like them on Facebook or tweet to your friends, and Sir Richard's will donate one condom to Haiti, so spread the word... "social sharing never felt better."
