What Lead You to Consider IUD Use?
I have been having really heavy bleeding during my period. My OB/GYN originally had me on different birth control pills (even the ones where you don’t have a period each month), but they did not offer much relief. Then he called me sometime in October of this year and suggested that I try the Mirena
Helpful Questions that You Asked your Doctor
During my appointment, the most important question I believe I asked was why the OB/GYN suggested the Mirena to me when he never had before (as this has been an ongoing problem for at least 2 years). I also wanted to know what the up-keep was like (Did I have to come in for many visits? Is there anything I needed to do on a daily basis? Etc.) and how effective Mirena is.
How Did These Questions Help in Your IUD Decision?
The question that most affected my decision was when he provided me an answer that sounded like music to my ears! He told me that Mirena had just been FDA approved to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and that this is the first IUD approved by the FDA for this additional medical problem. He even showed me a research study where women who used Mirena showed a significant reduction in menstrual blood loss. Then, he explained to me how hassle-free Mirena is (just checking the strings monthly) and that it was super effective. I was sold! He explained that he never offered this method before because the FDA just approved it for my condition.
What I'd Do Differently
- I don’t think that I would do anything differently. I feel fortunate that my doctor has stayed aware of the latest FDA approvals and came up with this solution for me.
- So far, I have had the Mirena in for about a month and a half and am TOTALLY satisfied. I have had my first period and the bleeding was SOOO much less. I didn’t have to miss any work or feel the need to stay in bed all day.
- I only wish that the FDA approved Mirena for my condition years ago!
